Millions of kids 18-30 yrs don't earn the big bucks Cousins and other high profile sportsmen earn.
These players are not paid for their footy skills - they are paid for the intrusion into their private lives, the expectations of the public and the example they have to provide - in my opinion. And the higher profile a players has - higher his pay .......... and expectations are greater in regard to his private life.
Look at footy players 20 years ago - some damned good players but they didn't cop the bucks of today - and they weren't expected to be good boys either.
Nobody forced Cousins to play footy, it was his choice. It was also his choice to accept the big money - which he did and with it came the criteria that he would be condemned mercilessly if he stepped out of line.
Nobody is questioning his footy ability - that is beyond doubt. His level of responsibility to family, mates, the game, fans and most importantly those who may be influenced by his actions - this is what is being questioned and the answer has led to his condemnation.
It could end in a fairy-tale fashion with Cousins beating the drugs and then becoming an ambassador anti-drugs etc. I sincerely hope so, but at this point of time one would have to doubt.
