    Downside to my holiday

    Hi all,

I'm going away for a few weeks in Gippsland, there is an inlet for boat launching except there are no ramps.

Being in a 4wd, every second man expects to be recovered after bogging their 2wd to absolute hell. For this I have NO sympathy - I would never have the balls to drive a 2wd into an ocean - plain stupidity.

Alas under moral obligation its hard to say "no, deal with it yourself" so I'm hoping to capitalise by doing the right thing

My question is where is a safe point to recover a 2wd, eg Falcon or similar from the front and what type of rope/strap/chain/connection media should be used?

Up to 20-30 cars get bogged per day

Roll down the front windows and run a chain through.

I would be writing down rego numbers. If you get a recurrance leave them there. Once bitten twice shy. Or do some damage to their car in the recovery as an incentive not to do it again.
Apart from that start charging $50 per recovery, especially with this many idiots.
A farmer down Hopetoun used to have his tractor parked on the beach during holidays. $10-$20 to launch and retrieve your boat for you. $100 when you got stuck. Nice new Statesman was drowned because of refusal. Then he charged $200 to get it out.

If reverse is an option then towbar is best bet - of course using the appropriate methods and materials to remain safe i.e. do not attach to towball.

I have seen forward recovery done by attaching to the front axle and then a very slow and gentle tow was actioned - not a snatch

    Two things Joel.
1/. Get the dill who got themselves bogged to attach the tow rope/chain themselves. If its wrong tell them - put it on something more solid. And hope they get filthy in the process
2/. Have some note paper and get them to write and sign a note that they accept responsibility if any damage is done.
If they dont want to do either, it gives you an excuse to say - well I wanted to help.

Why would you want to ruin a holiday by dragging out someone's stupidity - even if it were for $$ .... This looks like it's open for someone to come along and cause you lots of grief. Pull up your tent and move on. Remember - you said you were on holidays!

Mmmm... sounds like a working holiday

Don't forget to get a dozen (or more) contracts printed out that basically mean you provide forward motion for the consideration, $___ (whatever fee is suited to your whim); and if anything at all goes wrong it's the idiots fault and they are liable.

And remember, payment only in advance

Good idea about signing an indemnity
