If it was on LPG it would be a different story but not many converters like to do them and they are extremely exy to do an LPG convert to.

The TDI Discos, 97/98 seem to be the most popular as there were some build issues before 97 but they should all be sorted by now and they seem to be holding around the 10 to 18k mark depending on Ks and extras.

D1 V8s are cheap and have nothing in the way of resale, you will lose money on them but if you only need it for a short time, they arnt as exy to run as a 4.0 D2 but they do suck the fuel if you have a heavy right foot and as far as getting going blah blah blah, the V8 may sound like it's taking off quicker than the 300TDI but as soon as the boost comes in they are not much different in the go stakes.

TD5 D2's can be a bit of a lucky dip but again if it was going to break then it should have by now so most should be ok and they are worth the dollars if you dont mind eletronics.

Hope thats helpfull and not just long winded.
    Fuel is currently cheap

My '97 V8 D1 is up for sale since I bought a D3. In March of this year I did an early settlement of the loan that I took out for the D1. It doesn't look like the vehicle will sell for a price that will cover the settlement figure. In other words, I stand to be out of pocket by quite a lot of money. So what do I do? Do I wear the loss, or do I keep the D1? I've spent quite a bit on it in the last 12 months in repairs, and the now it is running better than ever, but what else is waiting around the corner that will need fixing? At 266,000km, has my D1 reached the end of its useful life?

A little voice in my head tells me to keep the D1. It's in good order, the engine sounds great, the drivetrain is good and it's brilliant off-road. My mechanic is puzzled as to why I want to get rid of it. However, SWMBO would like to see it go, especially as there are now five cars on the block but only two of us!

Huh, where'd you go to school? How do you make up $9.5 in 3000km at maybe 20c/litre difference and roughly 1/2 the economy.
    Besides, if anything a D2 V8 is better on fuel than a D1 V8.

YES I KNOW, it is called an exageration and was for comody purposes only but some people have trouble with that.

Maybe a or a was needed so you could have under stood a little clearer, I appologise for the inconveniance and appreaciate the fact you had to go to such great lengths to point it out.

    Again Im sorry.

By the way, this is called sarcasm

    Mate,

Same with our Foulcan and Disco!
Worth nothing, don't sell it, wear it out instead

On top of that I love the V8 Disco.
Poor Jaguars have not been touched since I bought the thing! Maybe I should recharge their batteries

I have not driven the Foulcan either!
Guess I should before the "Darling, there is a funny noise coming from the brakes, like a metalic sound"

Been there before and it was not cheap to fix

For some reason, my wife doesn't detect change in a car until it is too late...

    Thanks for the replies.

At the moment I'm hoping to get a 4wd at the lower end of the market (sub $20k) to see how it goes and get some skills over the next 12 months with the option of trading/selling it if it doesn't work out.

I'm not hearing that the Disco is a good option for this unless I guess I can get a real bargain out there.

I have never or ever will buy a vehicle on the basis of its saleability when time to upgrade, you buy what you want/ need/ afford/ have to.

No, with respect I think you're wrong - an option is to buy a cheap V8 D1.... get your skills on a great car. You won't find a toymotor or pootrol that matches it in price or pleasure in driving. Sell it after 12-18mths if you must but I somehow think you won't be disappointed.
