    Libs & Costello

    http://www.smh.com.au/news/federal-e...947541163.html

Peter Costello has made the shock announcement that he ''would not seek nor accept'' a nomination to be the new opposition leader.

Instead, Mr Costello said today he wanted to build a post-political career in the commercial world.

Australia's longest serving treasurer, who had long wanted to be prime minister, told a news conference in Melbourne he would stay on in parliament and then move on.

Mr Costello looked strained as he and his wife, Tayna, walked into today's press conference.

Tears appeared to brim in his eyes as he announced that his time in politics was coming to an end.

He seemed to regain a level of comfort only when he started to retreat into the same political rhetoric about the Liberal government's achievements while in power.
Mr Costello said he had spoken to his family and had decided to not accept the leadership.
    Pretty poor.

Sour grapes - only wanted to be Prime Minister - heard it on the radio at the same time I was reading the link.

I am no fan of Costello but good on him for being decisive about it and not dragging it on. From what everyone was saying about internal polls from both sides their seemed litle chance of him retaining it to the next election anyway.

Why should he do all the hard work for 18 months just to get shafted again?

Wow - something I'd never have predicted - now I have hope that the Libs can learn from their mistakes. They need to sit on the bench to once again learn a bit of humility and take a hard long look at how their arrogance lost the electorate. Oh no - maybe Turnbull will be their new leader....

I was suprised. If he played his cards right he may well have been the next liberal PM.

I guess he just didn't want to wait.

And lets face it... he could make heaps more in PE with his experience/credentials.

I can only imagine that losing a federal election and going from number 2 too also ran would bring tears to my eyes as well.
I don't blame him, opposition is a yucky job, and if people didn't want him as PM yesterday, they prob won't in three years. I think he is smart. Look to JHo and Big Kym here. Govt, sacked, leader, again sacked then leader only after years of rebuilding and then on his terms. The leader they elect this week will not be the the next lib PM unless he is outstanding. He could always challenge later if it goes pear shaped. We will all have forgotten what he was like anyway Perhaps a shadow ministry may reinvigorate him (not treasury).

Costello is an arrogat, smart **** little ****er that I HATE with a passion Plus I like to see the little **** squirm!!!!!

I don't support any of the mainstream political parties, but he realy gets on my nerves. Plus he's a god botherter, and I hate the idea of some religious **** running the joint to push there obsured views on the Aussie public.

But as Michelle Grattan said in the Age today, it's a long hard road with no guaranteed pot of Gold at the end.

It will be an interesting rebuild for the Libs.

At least he was forthcoming and decisive unlike his counterpart.

    Cheers
    Dave.
