Hi Brendan, If you are interested in some interesting reading on filters read this, I don't/won't use a K&N off road.

On the fine dust test Ben had to double check he was feeding the test media in the right side of the filter as the particle size hardly changed.
    Don't believe the marketing.
Thanks Rick - don't worry - haven't forgotten Stay tuned.

One of the major F1 race teams switched from K&N to fibrous filters after both their engines were destroyed during one race in bahrain!!!

caveat - I work for this company in another country... that said I can tell you it is more use when using the same oil with regular samples over time as then you get a trend...

i use the stock defender donaldson type filter with a snorkel with donaldson pre cleaner on top and after most trips away this time of year i get around a 1/2 to a cup of dust out of the pre cleaner from a days drive. money well spent

SJ, do you do interpreting or just the analysis ?

Been using ALS for testing but get a bloke in the US to interpret results.

Take your K&N filter out and hold it up to the sun, those holes you can see are the size of the dust particles that will get through to your motor, good luck, Regards Frank.

My opinion of K&N strainers is that they keep out the small rocks and the low flying birds. For serious outback work use a Donaldson with snorkel and scoop. Look at all the road train operators. The swirl bowl precleaners are meant for stationary and slow moving plant and are not really effective at highway speeds and can cause restriction. Donaldson used to recommend against fitting them to on-road vehicles. The cyclonic effect and evacuator valve on the Donaldson will dump a lot of dust before the element.
