I took an new 70series 4 door V8 turbo diesel wagon with front and rear factory lockers for a test drive...wow what a beasty.. and at $65k great value..
Only negative is the rear leaf suspension..but power ,oh the powerother wise not much different from my Defender.
Wife and I have decided on the new 200series Landcruiser V8 twin turbo 4.5l Diesel about this time next year as a joint pressie to ourselves as it will be a kick ass caravan tower (195kW of power/650 Nm Torque) listed as 10.3l/100kms isnt bad for a big car and GXL at 90k is reasonable.
With Landrovers being sold off every couple of years and always being under powered I can't consider a new one. but I will get a 90inch plaything though.
So al of those die hards that slag off the older fuel burning cruisers (like me)..take a new one for a test and it will change your mind.
Sometimes you need to stray from ideological purchasing to pragmatic purchasing.
With over twice the power and torque of the new Defender, the new 70 would be the obvious choice if you needed the extra grunt.
Shame about the leafs though, surely after all these years the rear end could get coils.
I drove a troopy and loved the engine. The handling wasn't a patch on a Rover though, and there's those leaf springs. When they go coil rear I think it will be in the running for me.
Their quoted fuel consumption is somewhat misleading tho. Maybe at 90km/h in ideal conditions.
A ute was with me at our Moreton trip last month - driving up to Brisbane he got closer to 6km/L... so that's what you can expect if you pull a van.
Getting close to V8 rover territory there, but there are other points for the diesel when remote touring.
Why not just wait till all the hype wears off and buy a 2 year old one for half the price.I think 10ltr's per hundred with a V8 and 2950 tare weight is very optimistic. The motor is strong but so is the running cost's,I wouldn't pay double the cost just to go up hills alittle quicker. Each to his own. Pat
On paper -and I guess, in reality for those who have driven the new cruiser V8 - they have the makings of a good vehicle.
I just can't come to terms that the rear wheels don't exactly track the front wheels.
Don't worry about the rear leaf springs - the rear axle being narrower than the front.........I know the 130 doesn't track when hard cornering but hell, in a straight line.........just don't like it.
And NOBODY will have wave to you either...and when you pull up at a rest stop, the Nissan drivers will glare at you, the Land Rover drivers will be talking with the other LR drivers, the Mitsi, Diahatsu, Suzuki etc blokes will just make out you are not there.......and the Toyota drivers? Their so full of "my vehicle is better than yours" that they can't even believe another Toyota is better than their's so you will just talk to yourself... and look longingly at the friendly group over at the Disco, Defender, Series, Range Rover collection.
But don't worry you will feel better when you hit the accelerator with the van behind you.
Just wondering though......I don't know how you will feel when Tombraider zaps past in a worked 2007 Defender and pulling an eighty foot van, 20 foot boat and towing a broken down Nissan 3 litre.
And it only cost $60K......the class and friendship comes with it free of charge.![]()
