Well those close to me know I'm not much chop when it comes to the "handyman" side of things, though I do give it crack every now and then. They also know I really know nothing about mechanic's or the like, though the missus has been impressed with my growing knowledge. Her old man likes to put the boot in every now and then with my lack of skills in this area.
One recent purchase in my book upped the "feeling like a real man" with my first trailer. Now some may say it is the first beer, or the first bit of nookie, but there are many metrosexual type fella's and those that enjoy the "sausage", who would experience same. However a trailer to me puts it into "real man" territory. Ever since I have had it, I want to trailer stuff around, any opportunity will do, but there was one thing missing.......to finish of the "real man" feeling. And that was being able to reverse it.
So far all my journy's have consisted of ensuring it was one way in, one way out. A recent journey where I had to deliver my 19's off the D3 entailed a visit to a client, into the city to drop off the tyres and swing back to Brissie South to pick up the kids after school. I was fine with the notion till SWMBO pointed out "Umm hunny, what happens if you have to reverse, you do realise you are going into the city and all over the place". Well panic started to set in, luckily I was able to do drive in and straight onwards for the whole trip.
That leads us up to this weekend. The new house we bought had a shed with a tonne of crap in it, so got the trailer in there, filled her up and off to the big tip ( wasn't going to risk the local drop off tip). It was late arvo so figured there wouldnt be many around so hopefully, fingers crossed, could just pull up to the side and dump. Turned out to be the case....phew. Went back today and got another load, palms a bit sweaty this time as was early afternoon, and to be sure as we rounded the bend.......yep every man and his dog and only option would be to reverse in. I did have a fleeting thought of just buggering off, but what sort of example was that for the kids in the car
.
I drove along till I could find a big enough gap between 2 cars, pulled all the way around....most likely 20-30 metres from the tip edge....and started the backing up. This was Mansville here, plenty other blokes reversing, no wuckers, taking crap off their trailers, trucks, utes, vans etc. Plus I knew I couldn't embarress the D3, so I remember instructions that had been given previously by smirking mates ( you know who you are) and turned left to go right, then right to go left, then ****, went a wrong turn and started to jack knife. Bloke to the left started to look a little worried in the rear view mirror with this big trailer aimed at his ute
. Came forward to straighten up, then back again. What seemed forever, I finally had my proud real man moment
. Got out of the D3 and looked at my handy work, pulled up with a metre to spare and was as proud as punch. However when I suggested reveresing the trailer down our rather steep and windy driveway the kids empahatically yelled "NNOOOO". But at least I am on my way

low range is the go, makes it so much easier. The one I hate is the boat trailer minus the boat, you cant see squat in the mirrors.![]()

Well, yes I can cookshouldn't worry...you maybe better at some of those supposed "female" arts, like cooking and sewing than most females are, I can sit in my home office and turn a $$ or 2, sewing is definately out and I have put up a fence with pickets and wire
( SWMBO thought I was the ants pants for that, and hugely surprised), but to reverse that trailer was a fulfilling moment
.
Good to know as some of my mates take great humour at some of my inabilities. One even had the hide to not only reverse my trailer when he borrowed it down my tricky driveway, but right through a tricky gap between the carport and my D3....bastard. I will be going back to the tip again next weekend to practice more as there is so much space to do so,if it helps at all,,

Well done, Steve![]()
I have had my camper trailer for 12 months and only this weekend was I able to reverse it into my driveway and not have it all crooked once there. You have to make a reverse right hand turn followed by a reverse left hand turn in a fairly tight townhouse driveway.
I was very proud of myself too
I know all the trailer reversing rules but if I haven't done it in a while then it goes pear shaped.
I use low range with an unlocked CDL but I don't know if you can simulate that in a D3 or not. Saves riding the clutch and makes it slower so you have more time to react.
I saw a new Pathfinder towing a HUGE van in the Ballina caravan park a month or so ago. He had to reverse it into a site which was packed out on all sides and was too small for the van I thought. Very narrow internal road too. Although this guy did it in one swift manouvre. I was stunned as was everyone around us.
Reversing a trailer is an art. I used to do a lot of water skiing with a mate who had a boat. He'd never let me drive the boatbut I always had to back the boat trailer down the ramp.
