Freelander - Where did it come from?

I posted a similar Question on the Freelander thread and did not get an answer.

Given that it appears to be a FWD platform with AWD thrown in, where did LR get it from?

I know the second series uses the Ford C1 platform.

Vehicles currently using this platform include the following:

2003 – Ford Focus C-Max (European, First vehicle on this platform)
    2004 – Mazda Mazda3 (Code name J48)
    2005 – Ford Focus (International)
    2004 – Volvo S40 sedan (code name P11)
    2004 – Volvo V50 station wagon (code name P12)
    2006 – Mazda Mazda5
    2006 – Volvo C70 coupe/convertible (code name P15)
    2007 – Volvo C30 (code name P14)

    Future C1 vehicles:
    2008 – Ford Kuga
    2008 – Volvo XC50
2010 – Ford Focus (North American)

The tiny Jaguar X Type used the Ford Mondeo platform.
Any idea where the first Freelander came from?

    Cheers

    Clicky...

    And...

    Clicky...

It mentions that there was no collaboration with Honda on the development of Freelander.

So it appears Land Rover built the Freelander, based on the Honda Civic Shuttle, but not actually using it.

Looks like the British got one back from the Japs who had copied Austin, etc. for years

    Thanks for the info, camel_landy.

Having a look at those articals and in hindsight, it would have been much better to have given Honda the idea and then just rebodied the CRV with a Freo body as it would have been a much better car knowing how the CRV's have been.

Rather be cold than broke like Freelanders leave their owners lol

Our second car is a 98 Carolla and is the most reliable little car I have ever owned since my 120Y.

The Disco has been pretty good but I always seem to be doing some sort of maintenance on it where the Carolla I just pump the tyres up every now and then and check the fluids and service when nessesary.

My Triton was the same but I didnt have the LC for long enough to for an opinion on how reliable it was but it took the brunt of a 60kmh T bone accident quite well considering it hit a Holden 1 tonner.

Jap stuff is Ok but has no heart and sole where brit stuff is all heart and sole and gives you the complete motorists experience as in you have to be able to repair the thing on the side of the road to get to where your going.

    Lol
