4 Young Aussies in a Hummer

Did anyone see the news last night about 4 young Aussies driving a Hummer from Sydney to Ireland?

I know a bloke who was going to do it a few years back and after doing the research he decided that the only vehicle to take was a 'fenda. Apart from the obvious reasons, it has the best back up across the world. How many Hummer dealers do you reckon there are between Indonesia and France?

He called his trip off due to political unrest in the Middle East.

Mechanics aside, I'm no Geo-Political expert but short of going through China, Mongolia and Russia I would think they will be passing through several Muslim States. Now I'm not getting political but it is a well known fact that, rightly or wrongly, many Muslims hate America with a vegeance!

Would you drive through their countries in a vehicle that many must surely see as a hated symbol of American invasion and intervention?

On top of all that, it is a big flash 4wd and even if they avoid political issues they will attract cut-throat thieves everywhere they go!

At best, they might be seen as incredibly insensitive driving a Hummer through Muslim states. At worst they might be a target for every Muslim fanatic with an RPG in the Middle East!

I don't think these boys thought this through very well but I wish them all the luck in the world!
    Steve.

There are thousands of "uninvited" Defenders in the Middle East at the moment too
    They're going to Ireland
You should see what happens to Defenders there

There are a few snips on Youtube going around on how capable those Hummers are....... One dipicts a Hummer at a car show running on a test track and got bogged and hung up on a 30 cm dirt mound.
They won't get far in a Hummer, they might make it to
Perth, but the rest of the world..... tell them they're dreaming and get a Landrover

    I see your point.
I was just thinking that America seems to be the number one on the hate list.
As I said, the bloke I know who was going to do it called it off alltogether. I think this is the best course of action.

during 2004 Ewan Mcgregor and Carley Boorman went through mongolia and kasikstan russia etc on there long way round adventures on bmw bikes they had a few small scares but nothing bad at all infact they made freinds everywhere they went and most didnt know that Ewan was in Star Wars and many other films they had a great trip. and earlier this year they wnet from Scotland to Cape town on the trip called long way down on there bmw bikes a few british people (5) were kidnapped not long before they left in africa but they had no probs so depends on the areas they goto and if they are friendly with the locals.
Anyway they could do ok if they use local knowledge (not just drive in and hope for the best ) i hope they know the local tongue hard to ask for directions if you cant understand them

How long ago did Marco Polo do his big tour? 400 or 500 years ago?
He said when he got back, "Never trust anybody, that comes from a place, that ends in "Stan". It was in a book an American had written about,,,

Oh. An American book, about places outside America.

    Quit now Shorty.

Seems it ain't changed much yet. As a matter of fact, it looked like this through my Kodak Instamatic lens in 1977.
Everybody in the world seems to think Mongolia and Siberia, and other such paradise like, out of the way places are preferable to the more direct route.

Been watching "Long way around". Got a bit whingey and girly-man like last episode. Eew, it's all muddy. Oh pooh, I fell off my bike. Again, and again.
Of course their crew did flick the 4WD over. That could have been nasty.

How capable do you think the Hummer is in dealing with varying fuel quality?
I'd be using nothing newer than a 300tdi.
