Smile Cleaning ID plates of paint

Some doofus saw fit to paint the ID plates in my beast, I have removed them, anyone know of a safe way to remove the paint and hopefully not destroy whats under it, the number is stamped but the rest is probably screen printed on and will remove with thinners I think so leave that alone, On a Series one what is exactly on the big plate on the firewall, there was a rectangular plate under it any ideas what these were for, why cant people use a screw driver or at least mask them up.

Unless I am mistaken the ID plate is anodised not screen printed, and so will not be affected by solvent type paint stripper, but in any case stripper can be used with caution to remove single layers of paint - put it on for a few minutes and then rub off what you can and wash. DO NOT USE ANY STRIPPER THAT CONTAINS ALKALIS as these WILL remove the anodising. Avoid any type of abrasive except perhaps a nylon dish scrubber, but make sure it does not contain an abrasive.

You may even find the paint has reduced or prevented fading.

From memory, the big plate is mainly instructions for using the transfer case and the smaller one is a warning about using four wheel drive on hard surfaces. There is probably also a plate from the Australian assembler unless it is fully imported.
