Fireworks at Wallerawang.... in a BIG way.

Fireworks factory at Wallerawang exploded last night. The balst was felt up to 30k away. Several houses close by lost doors & windows. So far no casualties, be interesting to see why.

Just saw that on the news. Police said they thought an intruder might have set it off. Not mich hope of finding them I'd say.

There goes the Adelaide fireworks for New Years eve..... (and Brisbane and Melbournes too BTW)

Someone needs to explain why'd you do this for a living. Didn't one of these places go up big time in SA a year or so ago and they never found the employees?

Yes, that was an explosives plant near Laura in the mid-north. Made mining explosives etc.

But think of the improvement in local air qualities because of it.

One went up a few years ago abut 4km from our place. Smaller than the Vic one but still 3 tonnes of explosives.

The bang was the loudest thing I have ever heard, I thought a plane had crashed. Very few people knew it was there, the local emergency services didn't so they had no idea what they were responding to.

We (SES) were called in to help out, including doing a sweep the next day to find unexploded stuff.

Houses nearby had their roofs lifted and lots of windows broken obviously. And there were no casualties. It was caused by someone dropping a box which made a spark which started a fire, and they all ran, very very fast.

The shockwave was enormous, we were on the powerline track and felt and heard it.

Howard and sons pyrotechnics has been operating for 85yr without an incident, the factory has been in the local area for ages. As Andrew Howard said firewords arent particularly sensitive in this way and that fireworks in storage dont just go off like that.

All of the containers that werent destroyed were left wide open so it looks like there either was a robery and the explosion was to cover the tracks or they were in the middle of it. No one knows yet. There are still police guards at the get 24/7
