Hi, I Cannot decide between a D2 or P38A

Believe it or not I am quite a sensible driver and don't sport a mullet. Have not had a speeding ticket since I was 20. Just like to enjoy my cars.

12's from an unoppened commodore is acheivable but not an easy feet you have to be a pretty good driver with regular practice at the strip to acheive those times. Mines an M6 (6speed manual) and are generally slower at the strip due to their below par shifters. It's taken me heads and cam upgrade to get myself well into the 12's. A better driver could probably steer it into the 11's especially with MT ET streets. But like I said before I'm ready to leave that sort of stuff behind me and start finding other avenues of motoring enjoyment.

x3 on this, but the P38 is more roomy and flash, but thirsty and can be expensive if something goes wrong.

In no way trying to replace Ron, but I think that the word you were looking for is idiosyncrasy. I couldn't find a definitive spelling for the plural, but would vote for "idiosyncrasies". HTH :)

So what is the consensus with the D2's then? Are people more partial to the D1's over the D2? Just wondering why people are a bit iffy on the D2?
So what would be the best LR for me if I wanted leather, climate and seven seats? I know the defender is the ultimate in offroad vehicles, call me soft but I couldn't handle bench seats and no trim. :o

itsok your not expected to sit in the bench seats while you are driving:eek:.........and as for the trim you cant see that while your driving either ;)

I don't think the P38 was ever a 7 seater. That would leave you with the D2.

If it is just you and your girlfriend then you would have no trouble fitting two bikes into the back of a D2 with the seats folded forward. I can do it in my D1 and they are shorter.

I drive both cruiser's and patrol's at work and I own a defender and D1.I cannot drive the jap vehicles and like it,they just don't have '' it '',what ever that thing is that LR's have.Go the TD5,do the mod's,they haul **** and save you a fortune in running cost's. Pat

I would think the best way to judge as to what vehicle is best for you is to go to a used car dealer and test drive a P38 a D2 and a D1 have a look under all bonnets and go from there .
Obviously you want one that has regular servicing and all repairs receipted for there are common problems with any make just deciding which is best for your needs is the hard part.
Of all the vehicles around Defender has the most room D2 has a bit more room than a D1 D2 is a bit more refined and stronger in the drivetrain the P38 is a bit more luxurious but has a few more niggles all of them are good but for the money I would go the D2 V8 most will say TD5 as you will get better economy they can be chipped and a better intercooler gives them more grunt .
I still think you should drive all 3 and not just one of each drive as many as you can before buying as this will help you decide.

Standard D2 TD5 auto for towing and easy and hard 4wding, Last weekend I towed a 1300kg car trailor for 380km round trip around 270km of that it had a Range Rover on the back (add another 2100kg) on the whole trip I used 44l of diesel. Average 8.64l / 100km (travelling was a mixture of Sydney traffic and up hill highway) not the best economy I have had but I was towing 3.4t.

Welcome Grrila, I'm new as well and have been through similar mental gymnastics when trying to decide on what to buy. P38's didn't feature due to us having too many kids
(5), but other makes of 4x4 did but we settled on an '02 D2 V8. I've been a fan of Land Rovers for a while, have a mate with a D1 diesel, and another mate with a P38 4.6 HSE, whist both have had a few minor niggles, both are addicted to the brand.

We're getting the ES spec which comes with all the fruit i.e. ACE, SLS, factory 18" wheels, leather upholstry etc. I'm like you, in that I will do a little bit of beach and trail work, plus towing a 5 meter fizz boat from time to time. But I don't expect to do too much heavy 4 wheeling, well not until I get my confidence up and know what I'm doing.

I would have probably gone for a T5 if one was available, but in NZ they tend to attract higher prices and are held on to for longer than the V8 equivalents, so what does show up for sale, has higher km's on the clock and tend to ber a little tired. Mind you I love my 8's so happy with what we've got. It arrives late December so will give you my novice first impressions in the new year.
