    Hi, I Cannot decide between a D2 or P38A

    Hi All,

Firstly I would like to say g'day! Oh and sorry if I have put this thread in the wrong place My first post here and I'm here to learn as much as I can, I know pretty much nothing about 4x4's. I've done a little reading here but I'm still stuck on the same question D2 or a P38A!

A little background on myself... I love my performance cars. I mainly frequent the LS1 forums and use a different log in name as I don't think my usual username would fit the mould here I currently own a HSV Clubsport R8 that I've spent around $15,000 in engine a driveline mods chasing my dream of a TRUE 12 sec streeter. My 12 second time slip in a full weight car with street tyres has been realised but now I think it's time to give her up as the clubbie no longer fits into my lifestyle. I was starting to get a bit large around the gut and my blood pressure was on the increase, I'm only 26!!! Anyway I now get into cycling and the outdoors more than cars and the clubbie is not much of a go anywhere car. Dirt driveways and shopping malls scare me! For a big car they fit nothing of any substance as there is no fold down seats! I'm also in a pretty serious relationship and I wouldn't mind something with a bit of class but can play mums taxi when I want to get back into performance orientated cars.

    Now for the questions!

Fuel doesn't really bother me too much at the moment but I don't want to use more petrol than what the clubby is using at the moment. Currently I get 10l/100km on the freeway (6th gear is a wonderful thing!) but around town that will easilly hit between 22-24l/100km. Now how economical is the 4.6 HSE Rangie? I've heard mixed reviews on economy but the general jist I see is it's around 16l/100km on the freeway and around the 22l/100km in the city. This is a bit higher than I hoped. Are there any simple mods that can be done to bring the fuel usage down?

Next question is I know the RR HSE is supposed to be the pinacly of LR during that period but what differences are there between a fully optioned D2 and HSE. Does the D2 miss out on a few things or are they exactly the same?

I do want all the mod cons and luxuries I can get. I like the idea of the HSE as there is nothing else you could want for but if I can get a diesel D2 with all options then I would be sold on the D2.

Also what are the best years to go for for the D2 and HSE respectively. I've noticed some DIRT cheap LR's RR's around the 95-96 year and I realise that may have not been the best years for LR but I was thinking with at least a $15,000 saving surely you could have everything that needs fixing fixed.... right??

Whatever I choose will definitely see the beach and basic dirt trails. As for the harder stuff I can't imagine I will be doing much of that but I'm very easily persuaded into trying these things so I never know.

Oh and budget wise I'm looking to go 25k or 30k for something pretty special but it would have to be bloody good to get me to hand over 30k. I don't want another debt as I'm looking at getting my first home this coming year.

Sorry for the long post guys. Any help much appreciated.

    Cheers!

Yeh most def a D2 V8 before 02 or after 03 as the CDL has been removed and most will tell you the CDL is a must have

Is there anything wrong with the D2 diesel that you would prefer the 8? I should have probably mentioned that I would need this next car to be able to tow a trailer with a race car (series 2 RX7) if things go to plan.

    What's a CDL?

Firstly, congrats for seeing the light and coming over to the LR side and getting rid of the commondore.

As far as your choices go, I would steer clear as both but if you had to take one or the other then the D2 would be the one and get the CDL kit.

The mid 90's Discos are D1's up until 98 which is more mechanical and easier on the pocket when things go wrong but are nowhere near as nice to drive nore come with as many electrickery bit's and pieces as the D2 or the P38a.

You wont see anywhere near 10l/100kms out of a 4.6 or a 4.0 V8 I think the best you could ever imagine getting would be around the 16 mark but a few people on here will debate that but on average to what most people say that is about what is expected.

TD5 would be the way to go in a D2 and get the highest spec possible.

I can tell you now that after the Bomadore you wont think that you are moving with any of them nore will you like the handling so my advice would be to maybe look at a 100series (Lexus Whatever)cruiser V8 which would more than likely tick all your boxes.

Not meaning to sound like a spoil sport but theres nothing worse than paying a lot of money for something that you wont be happy with after a short while.

I was thinking Land Cruiser earlier but have you seen the price of these things??? Poverty packs cost twice as much as an equivalent Landy!

On road performance really doesn't bother me anymore as the fun police have put a stop to car enthusiast enjoying their cars. This next car is definitely A to B and if I can't have speed then I want comfort and space for my bikes, luggage, camping gear etc.

Also something that can tow is a must as I really want to have a weekend racer for when the speed bug bites, but that is somewhat down the track.

WOuldnt have anything to do with people driving 12 second Comondores on the road would it?

As far as space goes, Bikes would still have to go on the roof or on racks on the back of a D2 as there isnt that much room in side, bit more than a D1 but a bit smaller than a Cruiser or Pootrol.

Comfort if big with the P38a Air suspention and pretty good in the D2 (probably a bit better than a Cruiser of Pootrol) but the on road handling of the 100series IRS is much better than a ACE equiped D2 for the average driver but as with all cars you can learn to drive them.

Again I am at risk of being shot here but thats just my opinion, you can do with it what you want.

Takes jack to get a Gen 3 into the 12's in street trim, diff gears, stall, cam and springs, exhaust and tune, they're still very streetable

    Cool

    Mate,
go the D2 withe ACE its short for active cornering enhancement. Hydraulic sway bars they handle treat.

Get a TD5 upgrade the ECU and throw in a bigger intercooler.

Thats what I have and its a treat to drive compared to the previous "cruiser".

    I would not go back

    Cheers

If it were me, I would also be going the Disco2 with TD5 and ACE. The TD5 is really easy to get power from, but they do have lag in the turbo. The ACE will make it corner fairly flat
    Cheers
