    Because Airbags are SRS...

If a vehicle is crashworthy without them then why install them?

Vehicles must meet current crash standards to allow them to be sold here.

Obviously these vehicles meet this criteria..

I had a quick glance at that OTHER 4wd magazine - I see a coupla Rover lads have been stirring the pot there. They've managed to avoid the possibility of having the Defender as #1 in THEIR list by not including it in the test Theirs is supposed to be one of these "new and updated vehicles only" tests I think, but the raft of changes to the 07 Fender should surely qualify.

On another thread lamenting the softening of the LandCruiser 200 series, someone said that there was now only one true live-axle, manual 4wd left - the Patrol. What are these people smoking?

The question isn't why they are street legal, thats a whole different story. They must meet a minimum standard and in this day and age but that minimum standard isn't good enough for a new vehicle being sold. Same story with brake tests, head light lumination etc etc etc, and you would expect the performance of all of these areas to be well above the standard required in a new vehicle hence ABS, power brakes, halogen and Zenon etc. There is no real excuse for not having airbags anymore. Today I renewed my licence and had to do an eye test as usual. I was chatting to the bloke about what lines you needed to be able to read on the board, and someone that meets the minimum requirement wouldn't see a stop sign until it came crashing through their windscreen - likewise you would expect that someone with that level of sight would wear glasses.

Aside from the Defender, Mat the Editor has only just given back the 4dr Rubicon also.
