It's a good little car but a bit rough on the interior trim. The body is good, though, and I've done the essential work in the last 10,000km, timimg belt and pulleys, radiator hoses, heater core!!!!!, belts and pulleys, wheel bearings, brake pads, etc. It has 263,000km

And I've fixed the water leks into the cabin.
I thought about doing that, but I liked it so much & was scared I wouldn t find what I wanted again.

Id love to have photos of it but with a full load on board and the water lapping the bottom of the windows no one was willing to get out to take them.

Fortunately it was a still water hole, the bottom traction was good and when we got out the other end (wanst I thankful for TC that day) I had to eat humble pie Id walked the track the week before and I knew it had a good bottom but Id forgotten it had been raining... the water was only ment to come up to the bottom of the door sills. there was nooooo way I was doing it again for photos.

just one more case of vehicular excellence makes up for operator stupidity...

I got lucky it could have ended much much worse and with less than 10K on the clock I think SWMBO would have been a little upset if it had.

It's not a Furphy, it's an opinion and thats all it is.

If your comfortable with having a box of bits that cant be fixed in your car then thats up to you, Im just saying that I dont feel comfortable with that so Id be sticking with a D1 300TDI, the Auto gives me enough problems in that which arnt really problems to anyone else, Im just a bit pedantic with it.

The problem with electronics in cars is that they do wear, the build resistance, creat dry joints from vibrations, gets corrosion on terminals and plugs which also creats resistance which can change the way sensors and electronic circuits behave/react to their inputs/outputs.

The older these things get the less reliable they become and they will wear out and they will have to be replaced and are you guys sure that in 15 years there will be new sensors and stuff available for your TD5's?

I cant say there wont be but it is getting hard to get some electronic parts for VK Comodores (e.g. electronic Dash parts) and other cars that are in that sort of age group and sorcing from the wreckers will only be buying the same problem again and again.

Im also sure that there will be people who will come up with solutions to these problems like the Loom issue but that is extra expense again on top of the already high price of normal maintenance.

Again these are just my thoughts as I thought this is what was asked at the start of the thread.

Great pic Slunnie, I dont normally get pics like that as If I go through something that deep Im not driving back through for a picture.

Gday mcrover, thanks for the pic comments. We sent a Defender Tdi through first to find the holes.... and then all drove through them. Aloa took that pic, and it was the day after I'd just replaced the radiator after putting the fan through it from hitting a crossing a little to quick.

Your thoughts re Tdi/TD5 I think are pretty common out there, and I was hopefully reponding to the thoughts rather than anything personal. Just trying to balance the discussion, but as you say, everybody has an opinion and thats what brings out the full story.
    Cheers
    Slunnie

Some of you may have seen me recently in the introduction thread. I am currently on the lookout for a TDI or TD5 in the Gold Coast / Brisbane area and frankly there seems to be a bit of a shortage in the area.

So far I have test driven a 1999 TD5 auto with 207K on the clock. The log book is stamped for oil and filters for every 10k but no receipts for any replacement parts and no idea as to what major items have been changed. The dealer just looked a bit vague when I asked for them.

Overall the TD5 looked clean, the interior was good, the engine bay very clean and the only real defects I could see was moisture in a headlight, spare tyre with virtually no tread and it did appear the brakes needed to go down a lot to stop.... asking price $16990.

Down the road I saw a 1998 TDI auto with 160K on the clock... still appeared in good condition but I was not able to have a test drive. It too states a full service history but again I was not able to see the receipts and it did not have a tow bar.. my main reason to purchase is to pull a boat in the future. Asking price $15990. (how much to fit?)

At the moment I am planning to get a RACQ inspection done on the TD5 but what realisticly will they be able to find?

My main frustration is that I have been looking for a while and there sre so few to choose from ( or am I just looking in the wrong place).

So what do you think.... go for it ? too much? or keep loking? Any thoughts welcome.

    Thanks

    Gozzie
