Suspension Lift and bigger Tyres on A pop top Camper

Ok...I have just bought an early 80's pop top camper and i want to run the same size tyres as the rangie on it and lift the suspension. In saying that i wouldn't have the faintest idea where to start...obviously will need to change the hubs?? and bigger leaf springs??

Hope you guys might be able to shed some light!

    thanks!!!

If it's leaf suspension, I just setup that axle as sprung over to gain about 4" lift I think it was and it has worked well for quite a while now.

Lifting it is the easy bit, fitting bigger wheels into those wheel arches, that could be a problem, i think 30" or 31" will be just about the limit.

Also if it has an annex, you'll need to extend the canvas to meet the new height.

I used these guys when I put electric brakes on my camper.

They can sell you everything you need and have great prices.

You could get the springs and a full axle with brakes and LR hubs of your choice all ready to bolt up (weld on spring hangers).

go spring over to start with and that should net you 4 inches as already you have about 3 options open to you

    1. biiiig spacer blocks

    2. weld up some mounts that lower the springs mounting points relevant to the base of the van.

    3. get some very very bowed springs.

but be careful as to how much lift you put on as the van might get unstable or bounce unacceptabley with the extra lift. It might be worth seeing if you can open up the wheel arches to accomodate the tyres and then lift it just enough to have the whole thing sit level behind the rover.

    Hi Steinzy.

I've just done the same with a home made pop-top. Was originally built on Morris Mini rear end and wheels. Have changed to Ford 14 inch rims and LT tyres.

I also put a new chassis and draw bar under the original box, as the original was a bit light on. Fitted leaf springs with blocks welded between the spring mounts and main chassis rails to give me the clearance I needed - there wasn't a lot of room in these wheel arches. Fitted longer corner jacks as the originals didn't reach the ground any more with new wheels under it. Also fitted new awning at the same time, so height wasn't an issue there.

Only other problem after that was the tow hitch on the Disco was way too low - have just bought a straight Hayman Reece tongue to correct that.

    Cheers ........... BM

    Total cost was $500.65

    That included:

Land Rover hub drums with Ford parallel bearings
10 inch backing plates with park brake option
Weld rings for a 45mm square axle (I had the axle already)
    Tekonsha Prodigy controller

I still need to buy the handbrake and cable but I haven't got to that part yet.
The brakes are fitted though and they make a huge difference especially on the dirt.

Also apart from having to weld on the weld rings it is all just bolt on and wiring. Easy to DIY. Easier if you can weld though or have a brother who can.

Back on target with this project!

I had pulled the roof off as there was some timber rot where the old canvas had been stapled!

found out the damage was far more extensive then first thought....had to rebuild entire roof!

needless to say...bunnings was my friend.....roof is almost finished and now insulated with LED down lights!!!
