    Thinking about a D2

    Hiya gurus,

I'm thinking about venturing over to the dark side and buying a late model D2(diesel auto) - the updated one with the new headlights.

It'll be used for general off roading - mud, dirt, sand etc plus some touring but won't be heavily loaded, or used for towing.

What are the main problems to look out for? I know of the oil in the ECU loom but what other problems are there? I've heard that the door seals aren't up to scratch as well. How strong are the axles, or are they only a problem with bigger rubber?

I know there are a lot of Landy bashers out there but even reading the problems on these forums (inc D2au) there seems to be a lot of issues. So whilst I love the look of the Disco I don't want to spend every second weekend working on some fiddly fault.

Also, how high can I go WRT a suspension lift? Is 50mm the limit without going to buying replacement arms etc?

What about tyres? If the std tyres are 29", how big can I go without running into problems? Can I go to 32"s without a noticeable loss in power? Will it need a guard chop?

What other mods should I look out for? (I already have a lifted and locked Suzuki and a std Troopy).

    Cheers,
    Ben

P.S. I am in Sydney if that helps any? I know of Graeme Cooper so may have a gander over there and have a chat.

The door seals aren't that bad, they just have a slit in them where they join. Many of the disco2's on D2Au get used for all they're worth and so as a group we tend to highlight many things that usually are not a problem. The other major one to look out for is the front propshaft in the double cardin joint. These are not servicable from the factory and depending on it's life can fail. Most of the other problems that you've read about (although some having bad consequences) have just such a minimal frequency eg Oil pump bolt (but get it checked), turbo hose delamination, head movement/plastic dowels (from overheating), Auto cooler hoses popping off etc. You'll also read a lot of opinion re the effectiveness of ETC, but you'll also find the people that get out there and really use them will never disable the ETC.

The axles etc are not bad for a Landy. They're strong enough as long as you don't go carefree with your offroading. The axles and diffs will break, but you'll be giving them some stick to do it. I ran standard axles/diffs with 33's for quite a while and included a fair bit of difficult 4WDing without problem. When I went nuts on a stepped hill I broke them.

50mm is the easiest and the most problem free lift. You can go up to 4" without new radius arms, but there is a lot of mucking around to do it rather than just bolting in springs and shocks. After that.... not sure.

Tyres... 265/75-16(32"), 235/85-16(32") will fit though you will need a bullbar for clearance and a 2" lift will be a bit nicer. 255/85-16 (33") can be fitted though will rub around in the guards and I don't believe 285/75-16 (33") is suitable due to bodywork rubbing. 33x10.5-16 Simex will also fit. Larger than these and you will need more lift and to cut the guards. With these tyres you will notice the power loss when taking off, though it's nothing too terrible. There are a lot of people fitting 265/75-16 to Disco2's - that's not to make any legality comments.

Re Graham Cooper. He has an excellent reputation for knowing Landies and many people swear by him, though I think his shop is very stuck in his ways in some (not all) areas of vehicle development and is generally conservative. There are many things that I've heard that his shop has said can't be done... but they can be. I'm also not sure how he will cope now that Maxidrive are closing.

My2003 TD5 (October 2002 to end of D2) are a good unit for both power and fuel economy. Also for about $1,000 or less depending on how handy you are, can have 30-40% more power with the same fuel economy.

I have done 84,000 klms with the ABS unit replaced by Landrover and a MAF sensor by myself. They are a sound build and can handle a lot of weight loaded and towing plus are brilliant off road. I bought mine new but there are some unbelievable buys out there at the moment on good second hand units.

Superglue will fix the gap in the door seal rubbers for good.
