    Tempted but undecided

A quick peruse of the Rays Outdoors catalogue shows that they have Coleman single mantle dual fuel lanterns for $89.

I had a good look at one but was unnerved by the whole white gasoline thing. (Well that and the fact that I already have a Tilley X359 (hen's teeth) which just cost $89 to service, a Petromax 829, a Dietz hurricane and two bodgy asian hurricanes for "workhorses"). They seem quite good but from experience of other people's equipment there are two main problems with the Coleman white gasoline products: 1/ The lanterns claim to be regulating but I have found they are either on or off and 2/the stoves don't like to simmer very finely. It seems at low throttle both the stoves and lanterns stop vaporising the fuel efficiently and can flare up.

I also turned the box over and over trying to find out where they are made. I couldn't see it printed anywhere.

Anyone pick one up and can make comments about it?

I got one. I run it on petrol. It is about 8ish years old, maybe more. I used it for a year then stored it for several and over last 2-3 years have used it regularly.

I think it is a fantastic bit of kit. They do flare whilst warming but not once going in my opinion. And with just some commonsense I highly doubt it will cause an issue. I have never done any thing to mine except change mantels and fill with petrol so when it comes to running costs it is bugger all. The other thing with them is they seem pretty simple compared to other options and there just ain't much to go wrong with them.

I had a stove years back.... piece of rubbish... Not even sure where it is now to be honest but everything went wrong with it and it was poo.

    all the best,
    Xavier

I got one five or six years ago & haven't had any problems with it apart from the standard one of mantles breaking on bumpy roads. I try and run it on Shellite (?) but it runs on unleaded if you can't get Shellite, it's just dirtier.

I heard that you can spray the mantles with hairspray when you pack them away and this stops them from crumbling, but haven't tried that one yet.

I have a Coleman shellite pressure lantern. Early this year I considered writing a stern letter to Coleman to tell them that had I known the item required such a frequent maintenance schedule, I would have bought something else. I had to dismantle and clean it this year. I only bought it in 1976. I also have a three burner Coleman shellite stove bought at the same time. It has not yet required a service so I am happy with it. The stove will simmer gently, with an almost invisible flame using the middle burner only or using one of the outer burners while the middle is used for sterner stuff. I would recommend these products to anyone.

I bought one of these coleman dual fuel single mantle lanterns in 1994, it's bloody brilliant (excuse the pun). It gets used once or twice a year for a week at a time, and has done a huge off road mileage, it's getting due for it's second replacement mantle, not bad for 13 years of use. Brightness is adjustable from a bit more than a candle to the full 125 watts, very good for toasting moths. I have only ever used unleaded in it. I paid $149 for mine in '94 so $89 is a very good deal, it will last you a lifetime .

You need to know how to use them.

I have a coleman dual fuel lantern and a 2 burner stove.

they are fantastic bits of kit and although people think Petrol ooo dangerous explosions ooo. The actual ignition of the petrol is much harder than with LPG. Also if they fall over some LPG will flare and have a sea of flame but the Dual fuel will keepworking or just go out! Also works in colder temperatires. can not gas yourself. Can refil on the road, etc

Only down side to the lantern is it is not kid friendly. The top is super hot and burns instantly if touched. We use battery lights when the kids are about.

I went camping with a group recently and they all bitched about the dual fuel stoves. They saw mine work perfectly every time. None of them had read the instructions in the lid or knew how to light them. My brother dug his out after that and now swears by it too. They all thought you needed a puddle before lighting. If you use them right you will not even have to wash the outside of your billy!

I have a spare pressurising pump and the Convertors as they call them but never needed to change them.
