    Pleaase explain number 2

    Here is another one
In today's IDQ20032 Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology report we can read [Quote] The State Emergency Service advises that people in the affected area should:
    - seek shelter in strong winds, preferably indoors and never under trees,
    - secure loose outdoor items,
    - and if near the coastline, stay well away from the water's edge. There are
reports of people yesterday being swept into deep water while wading in the
    shallows. [Quote]
This is against what they have done in Fraser Island (see please explain thread).
If the smart Government authorities is booking you for not using seat belts because your are risking your life and others, why they don't impose fines to the campers under the trees already there and the authorities who relocate the new ones there

Well see, if a camper drowns, they can sue the National Parks, because fresh signs were not erected to warn of "Swimming in waves 5 metres high may cause drowning".
However there are probably already signs in the campsites saying "Do not camp under trees".
    Simple really.

This is a couple of my posts from another forum from last night re Fraser:

Just got back from Fraser this afternoon, it rained it was windy but it was good fun. When we got to Rainbow Beach today it was blue skies and a bit of wind. They had cleared all the campers from Inskip Point and closed all those camping areas until further notice due to possible extreme weather conditions.

We were up near Orchid Beach. At no point were we advised/requested to leave the island although the ranger did say the beach was closed to recreational purposes on Friday afternoon and to go back to where you were staying unless you were leaving the island.

It seemed that everyone you spoke to had a different version of what was happenning, campers advised to move to higher ground, I think some campers were requested to leave the top end of the island and go to central station to camp. Today we heard from other drivers that they were requesting everyone to leave the island yet when we got to the barge/ferry at Inskip there were cars coming onto the island including tour buses.

We were also told that the island was closed yesterday (Friday) and no people were being brought over to the island, the people moving into the place we stayed in were trying to get a permit to allow them to get access as they weren't camping - I have no idea if they were successful

We all had messages from friends on our mobiles asking if we safely got off the island due to the 6-7m seas, I'm not sure where they think these seas were but nothing we saw looked anything like this, yes the sea was rough. At no point did it ever feel dangerous or really serious weather conditions. At Waddy Point the waves were no any higher that I have seen them previously.

See what develops tommorrow, maybe time to go windsurfing

    Another post:

the wash this afternoon had been up to the boarding at Dilli village entry. We saw no evidence of it being over the dunes at todays 11.45am high tide (Saturday). It was windy and the swell was larger than usual but it wasn't raining today like it was for the past couple of days, I think it rained all of Thursday night pretty much non stop. Still don't think I would have been wanting to camp in those conditions especially on the eastern beaches.

It was then the fun of dodging the water for the 5km between Dilli Village the the first entrance to the inland road (which is still a shocker) getting down to the barge and Inskip Point

    Further:

The rangers I believe were told to close the beach by the minister who was probably no where near the island and most likely had no first hand experience of what the conditions were actually like. I would suggest that where the campers were relocated to was Central station which would be much more comfortable and safe for camping than along the eastern beaches. It did not seem to be windy at all in Central Station. Also given that from this location if they did in fact have to evacuate the island, they can either go via River Heads/Hervey Bay or down to Hook Point/Inskip Point. They would also be able to communicate to everyone much easier with them all in one location that spread over 150km of beach.

As mentioned above there is only 5km of beach that needs to be driven on south of Dilli Village to get to the Hook Point barge as then the inland road goes the rest of the way. There are inland tracks from Central Station down to Dilli Village via the lakes

Central station was full of tour operators on Saturday which seems to indicate that they are exempt from the no one to enter the island.

We caught up with Ricey, maybe he will have a different view of it all, he was camping north of Orchid Beach and chose to leave on Friday afternoon instead of Saturday.

I have no idea what the conditions are like up there today, I suppose it will come down to what happens with the weather, if nothing eventuates they will be critized for over reacting

I am a bit sarcastic, but I think that after what happens in USA all the politicians and senior public servants cover up their "rear" and do not take any risk.
Then again nobody can predict 100% in which way is going to go the lower system and if it is coming back northwest with severe strength the people in Fraser can be in trouble.
Meanwhile here in Moore Park Beach our only concern is blackouts. The Waeco is ready near the 12v battery and the XXXX in standby in the beer fridge
    Cheers

It's the old Damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Reality is there is a "tropical depression" with what will likely form in to a reasonably destructive cyclone. Fraser island is not easy to evacute in a hurry nor is it particularly well set up to accomodate all the campers in suitable protective areas should a cyclone/very heavy storm head that way.

I'm surprisped they aren't closing the island and evacuting all tourists.

If they did nothing and left it up to those visiting to make their own decisions you can imagine the bun fight for them not telling people to leave.

I don't like camping in the summer anyway, but on a beach, in the face of a subtropical depression complete with big tides.......how enjoyable. And good on the authorities for suggesting people move.

Central Station would be safe enough, but it is (at least was) walk in camping there ie you couldn't park your car next to your campsite.

normally I think it still would be walk in camping only, there is a carpark for campers use only, but there were people setup everywhere, one lot even right next to the displays info booth, I think they relaxed the rules just to fit everyone in
