    Freelander ?

hi guys, new member here. We are thinking of buying a 2000 freelander with the 1.8L K series engine. What is the story with the cylinder lining and cooling system/head gasket? any advice (other than "don't, that is )?

    cheers, Naomi

I'd seriously suggest that you look at a TD4 Auto instead...

The problem with the 'K' series engine is that it gets hot-spots, which in turn causes the liners to slip. This is what gives the appearance of a head gasket failure. It's a problem that not only affects the Freelander but also the MGF and Elise.

I second the td4 if you can. The petrol engines had a heap of problems and all very expensive to fix.

Was told just yesterday by a land rover mechanic that parts for the last freelander are still often difficult to come by too.

What will you be using the vehicle for out of interest?

General transport and to go fishing/camping/bush treking. there are only three of us, so we don't need something huge, but local conditions mean we *do* need something more capable than a car, but something reliable too.

diesel model would be good, but there aren't any about, and transport is an major issue right now (both cars just died)

    thanks for the advice

There are a couple on sale in the sydney area (turbo diesel ones). Let us know the area you live in as someone on here may be able to point you in the direction of Feelanders for sale in your area.

Dare I say you consider a Subaru forester? I know you seemed keen on the Freelander but as someone who just had one on loan for a week I wouldn't rush into one.

The forester is a great vehicle and they go for a hell of a long time. Can pick them up second hand easily with good specs also.

I'm not saying don't go a freelander I just think their could be a better option.

Everyone will probably shoot me down for saying what I did but..... My opinion.

I just searched Used Cars - New Cars - Search New & Used Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au and there are quite a few diesels available. Though they may be to expensive depending on your budget.

Before you do anything, go and test the Disco Td5 automatic and then make up your mind. It very nice vehicle to drive and very good in fuel economy. Will be not surprise me if it is more economic than the Subaru (which is a very good car)

I agree but if Naomi is looking at a freelander 2000 model it sounds like the budget may not go to a td5 disco? I could be wrong on prices though I'm not good with all that. I think they are as economical as a Forester. I use to run 7ltrs per 100Km's in the 2.0ltr forester on open roads and 8.5-9.5 in the city.

I ran my forester to 180,000Km's without a single issue (oh, loose exhaust) and then sold it but that was pretty good kays.

The city economy you quote is interesting because I noted that the current impreza has a combined figure of 8.9, which is not really all that flash... I would have thought the bigger heavier forrester would have used a touch more.
