    Thumbs up Lakes Entrance, Victoria

For a non 4wd comfort holiday of c 5 days:

I'm unfamiliar with area - where can one stay close to water ie good serviced appartments, nice park cabins? Lakes Entrance or Metung? We'll have kayaks and would like to fish.. but then again we'll also be surfing. Hire boats? Any nice drives close by? (We'll be in Forester - not Disco, as have no racks on top for 3 kayaks).

    Thanks

When were you thinking of going ? Only because the whole lake system have problems with green algae at the moment. All the lakes are off limits for swimming but boating is still OK. It's caused by nutrient run off from farms etc after the recent rains.

I'd say Lakes Entrance itself is more your family oriented place, with more for the kids to do. Can get busy this time of year. There's fishing charters that go out past the entrance. Plenty of accommodation options there - take a look on the web.

Metung is a lovely spot , smaller and quieter than Lakes and more for your relaxing, pottering around holiday. No ocean beaches though. We have hired a 30ft boat ( motor cruiser ) from there in the past and cruised around the lakes for a week. Fantastic - highly reccommend that ! You can hire yachts too, if sailings your thing. There's also day boats you can hire for a bit of fishing.

Paynseville and Raymond Island are quite nice spots too -actually my personal preference. You can hire boats from there too and go over the lake to the bird sanctuary and 90 mile beach.

Plenty of good drives in the hinterland - go up to Buchan and see the caves or even on up to McKillop's Bridge if you want too - the Forester will handle that no problems.

    1. does the algal bloom also mean fishing is off?
    2. cruiser hire or sailing sounds interesting..... will take a 'captain cook'
    3. looking at week starting 14.01
    4. 13yo is keen body boarder, but we also like to kayak ... there will be 3 adults who like to do active things and the 13yo. Will take our mtb bikes as well.

Any other spots - we chose this area as we are up in NSW highlands and daughter at leongatha vic - so seemed reasonable compromise.

how about Mallacoota ? as another option.
We love Mallacoota and Croajingalong NP. Take a drive in to Wingan Inlet and drop the kayaks in there and paddle up to the falls for a swim in rock pools-fantastic.

Marlo is also out that way and has a lovely tidal estuary and river opening out to open ocean, long deserted beaches and close to the Orbost. Snowy also flows thru Marlo, there are 2 caravan parks 1 almost on the beach and the other in the bush out of town, nice pub but otherwise a pretty sleeping town.

I would second the Marlo recommendation, Snowy River estuary, great places to drive to. There are spots on the estuary where you can wade across to the beach and see where the river meets the sea, would be great for kayaks. When I was there in 2006 there was a series one in sitting in a workshop yard in the main street of Orbost.

Pic attached of the estuary as a thunder storm swept in. The ocean beach is the thin strip in the middle.
