What's this reinflating a tubeless tyre with lighter fluid trick?

Tonight's Top Gear was about a drive to the north pole (north magnetic pole actually - much closer to Resolute, Canada than the geographic north pole).

Gee those guys drove like idiots in what is a very unforgiving environment - I'd be trying to preserve my vehicle but I guess they have limitless backup funding - still it puts others at risk if they get into trouble...

BUT - is anybody aware of the issues/practicality of the demonstrated tyre reinflation by filling with lighter fluid and then ignitiing it ?? - apparently worked in minus whatever degrees temperature

    regards - Laurie

My dad told me about this one... works with petrol too. You pour in a very small amount of fuel into the tyre, roll it around and then throw a match on it. The sudden expansion of the gas as the fuel burns seals the bead and inflates the tyre long enough for you to get a slow pump onto it and keep inflating it.

disco steve, and george 130 have seen it done....

areostart or startya bastard works best... (dont ask how I know that.)

in a 235/75 a 2 second spray completing 2 turns of the wheel and left to sit for about 10 seconds before you get the match onto it convenitenly inflates the down tyre to aproximately 20-25psi (again dont ask how I know).

What you need to be carefull of is debry getting caught in the bead not allowing it to seal as the remaing fuel in the wheel will continue to burn and raise the internal temp of the tyre but not pressureising it. when it runs out of fuel/air it will rapidly cool and can suck the beads back in leaving you right back where you started....

    some other tips.

If your going to try this chain the tyre so if it goes horribly horribly wrong you dont get spranged.

dont try this untill you can light and flick a match at least 10 feet and hit a target about the size of a foot ball.

better, have someone else light the bugger....

best use an igniter line which is essentially a piece of hemp cordage damped with metho and then laid across the tyre (but not so as it can be caught in the bead) thats at least 4ft out past the tyre light that and duck behind your vehicle or someone you dont like and dont care if they know that.

When I get my trailer rubber and the wifes new tyres I'll demo it again....

I would say you have gone into enough detail there to suggest you have done it... a number of times... and perfected it from experience...

YouTube - Tire bead re-seat on the trail, starter fluid and flame

YouTube - Safest way to seat the beads, as provided by our lead tech

playing with ether and fire is not recomended.........but it can be fun if no one gets hurt.....

the main reason for this method is to stretch a tyre to fit a wide rim......

thanks for that guys - I've done millions of ks but in my sheltered life I'd never come across it...

I specially like dave's relevant safety warning

Cant help but recall a safety film I seen years ago of a tyre fitter in germany or somewhere was inflating a truck tyre outside of a cage, he toddled off to do something left it connected came back and was leaning over the tyre to disconnect the hose and she went bang, blew him up and left an imprint of his body in the tin roof, killed him.
