Interesting trip - non Land Rover

Just been reading an article in one of my Clubs magazine.

This "Retired" gent and his lady, just completed a 9,682km trip, arriving home 2 hours behind shedule.

He drove from Brisbane to St George, Thargominda, Noccundra, Inaminka, then along the Strezelecki Track to William Creek, then acroos to Coober Pedy via the Anna Creek track. From there on to Ayres Rock, Docker River, Warburton, Tjukayiria Road House, Laverton, Leonora and to Kalgoolie.

From there he returned to Brisbane via, Norseman, Pt Augusta, Cobar, Wilcania, Narrabri and Goodiwindi.

Now some of you will know what bad roads he went through along with bulldust and huge holes.

Here comes the crunch, what was he driving?
Would you believe, a 1980's SIII Jaguar V12!!!
He made the whole trip without a drama. Damaged the exhaust pipe just before Warakuma Road House and fixed it with the skin of a coke can and some wire. Later closer to Warburton the car fell into a metre deep dust hole that had a log in it covered also in dust. The return fuel line whas damaged and he fixed it with liquid steel.

He fitted a vice to the front bumper, had Yokohama ST sand tyres on the car and carried 160 litres of fuel, spare food and water for three days, a spare oil change for every componet, aircompressor, fuel pump, belts, hoses, filters, snatch strap, towing gear, bull bag and shovel.

All he used was the fuel, a piece of wire, plus the food and water.

I cannot believe he trusted his old Jaguar to do that!
Overall he spend $1,923 in fuel and the V12 averaged 22.7mpg on the black!
I'd do in the Disco but NOT a Jaguar..

    Okay
Scanned from The Queenland Jaguar Driver.
One small error, the car is a Daimler Double Six (name change, same car)

Totally believable - family and friends were 'doing' the round Australia trips in the seventies in holdens and toyota 2wd sedans and station wagons..... I can't believe the places my father took me when I was a boy, in his 1962 EJ and 1967 HR - especially around nowra and jervis bay.

I traced the trip on a map and scanned it.
