Is it a Man thing, this whole my 4WD v You 4WD?

D3's are great for a high tech 4b, probably the best but not my cup of tea, same with D2's and P38's for the same reason.

Deefas are great but I cant fit comfortably in one and Mrs Mc doesnt like driving Manual (and Im getting used to this auto thing) so without major mods, It wouldnt be much use buying one.

Classic Rangies are just getting too old for an everydayer unless you go down the rebuild track.

The only thing left in the middle which suits our needs down to the ground is the late model D1 300TDI auto which we own for that very reason.

As with all D1 owners, I would love to have the room that a Deefa 130 has in the back but you just have to leave stuff behind or spread stuff over 2 discos that are going together instead of everyone pulling their stove/BBQ out, you just bring 1 and stack something else where that would go etc etc.

Ray, I couldnt keep up with you coming back from Tolmie so I think that Deefas go quick enough (or my Disco is just too slow).

Mine is an every day car (I don't drive it every day, but it is my only registered vehicle) and it hasn't had a rebuild. Engine and gearbox are original. Transfer case has been replaced due to someone elses stupidity. Front axle is original, rear axle has a limited slip centre. I just maintain it properly.

And there are plenty of series vehicles used as daily drivers too, for that matter.

i agree mate, Dad has always had landcruisers, i love landcruisers, just happens
that i bought a Land rover, love it to. If it does the job, Fine by me.

On a day to day basis here I see at least 3 old Series machine getting about always the same ones and they are older fellers who have them, if you dont mind not having the creature comforts and you take a relaxed approach to driving a Series is fine, really nothing much goes wrong you cant fix, wouldnt have one as the family machine though, people are all different, what I like others hate and vice versa,if your happy driving it and it gets you were you need to go in one piece and without making you dip your hand in the wallet too often it dont matter what sort of 4wd it is. I love Series Rovers, cant get enough of them always been like that, I know there are plenty of others or this site wouldnt exist.

Agreed, Ive personaly been involved with 2 that have gone past the Million miles mark one even had the log books to prove it....

Hate to throw a spanner in the works, but I dislike four wheel drives apart from Land Rovers simply because Land Rovers:

have character
have history
the drivers tend to have a comaraderie lacking in other brands, possibly because of the above.

To me, Land Rover are a benchmark. Other four wheel drives are just plain boring.

I do however have a healthy respect for Jeeps, as they are what kick started the Landy.

There are few things more satisfying than driving your Landy & getting waves from other Landy drivers.

Oh, the other thing I forgot to mention, a little thing called PASSION!

I agree. We have helped numerous other people, in Landys as well as Toyotas, Nissans, etc. What I was getting at is I personally find other brands boring and wouldn't buy one because I like Land Rovers. Doesn't mean I don't respect other people's choice of vehicle. I also didn't imply Land Rovers are a superior four wheel drive. I was trying to express my opinion as to some possible reasons, based on my personal opinion, as to the undeniable worldwide lasting appeal of Land Rovers, despite their turbulent history, especially the series vehicles.

As you can see from this photo, this was just one of the many occasions we have assisted non Land Rover vehicles in distress. (And no, we didn't big-note ourselves or belittle the owner of the vehicle needing assistance. On the contrary, we were very sympathetic to their plight).

I miss my Wrangler!

But I agree (apart from the bit about waves - don't get any!), way back when, I had Fiat or Alfa twin cam sports coupes - others had twin cam Corollas etc...passion is important.
