Thread: Is it a Man thing, this whole my 4WD v You 4WD?

It's far more basic than all that.

A) If you want a 4WD and are ovine in nature (the vast majority) then you'll by a jap 4WD.

B.) If you want a 4WD and want to be different, you'll buy an LR, or a maybe Jeep. Street cred and differentiation from "the sheep".

C) If you're a purest, traditionalist or like to tinker, you'll by a series/defender.

D) If you've got the $$ and like technology, you'll by a D3, Freelander or RRS, etc.

But "B" is the root of it.

I heard this yesterday from a bloke who saw my 110 in the shed:

"Landrovers: they wear out in 20,000 miles and keep going for another 300,000.........."

I can see the humour and some truth in the statement.

I drive toyota's at work and own LR's and that suit's me fine.I feel,most other LR drivers feel it too that there is something about them that makes you own them.I honestly could not see myself as a tojo owner even though I drive them alot I just love my Defender.I don't care that she doesn't have a twin over head cam engine or 8 cylinders or some high poo turbo she's mine and I've had her from new and thats that.I like most others just hate the way people say there crap even though they have never owned one and are one eyed.Tojo drivers are the best at bagging other makes even though they are the make with the most problems. I wonder if the same issues arise in boating circles?? My Mast is better than ures??
My choice of 4x4 was very simple, I am over 6 foot and very broad needed a good 4x4 with plenty of room for me as well as good vision.
My first 4x4 was series 2A and I must say I am looking forward to owning another 2A down the track.
I will go out on a 4x4 run with anyone in any vehicle as long as they are safe and carry the right equipment no mater what brand vehicle or recovery gear.
PS Rovers rule no Question
I will however still take the micky out of bogged vehicles no mater who or what they are.

Great responses so far. Now these 2 quotes...for example ....is part of what I mean from "this side of the fence".....is it that it is asian or that bogans drive japanese 4WD's?? I don't think I am special because I drive an LR, nor because I wanted to be different. I didnt spend over $100k on the D3 just because I had the $$$ or the technology either. It was because I have always liked LR's and when the time came, I bought one. I bought one because I loved the look of it, it had 7 seats and I could learn to 4WD and explore, and I knew they were a good 4WD.

The first 4WD I ever drove was an old Cruiser trayback we had on the farm, that thing went everywhere and through everything. When I was in my teens I had a hankering for a Hilux Ute, wasn't till mid nineties I saw a Disco and got brochures etc but ended up getting a Merc instead. For me I wouldn't own a Japenese vehicle of any make or brand, simply because they are not my cuppa tea.

This all came about because a) was on another forum and there was all these urban myths about D3's from people who had no idea but felt free to espouse their knowledge and b) from some of the hard core comments I read from time to time on here about peoples feelings towards another brand of vehicle. Its a car.......maybe the invective should be aimed at the person driving the car, not the make of car itself. Just like drivers of other makes as with LR's you will most likely find the same mix of people, from all different walks of life who are passionate about their choice of vehicle and lifestyle. No doubt, the other brigade can tend to be one eyed, but from what I read from time to time so can we,

We had a SWB job on our farm when I was a kid.
The old man used the blitz to pull the Buick out of the bog, often. We had a sand road to the main gravel highway, back in the 50's.

A bit later - we used International Scout for similar work on farm.

Most of it is god natured ribbing, like footy. There are some who over do it to the point of abuse or only their opinion is right. Most 4x4s are OK but have their particular limitations, the majority of us who drive LRs just seem to like something different and with character.
If I could afford a D3 I would have one in a minute, but I like all LRs.
On many occassions I have been pulled over to recover a 4x4 to the statement "Thank God a Defender, he will get us out".
I think it is more about attitude and method of driving than the 4x4 that determines ability. Also many people buy a 4x4 and think it will go anywhere as is. It suprises me the amount of people who will not even bother to let their tyres down when bogged on the beach.
