Thanks for the clarification, however it does depend on the tyre. Most radials have an aspect ratio (the ratio between width and height) less than 100% all to do with the strength of the sidewalls. So on these reduced aspect ratio tyres you need to increase the width of the rim to retain the overall diameter. Crossply tyres have more rigid walls than do most radials so can have a taller aspect ratio (100%).
The Land Rover forward controls (101", 109" and 110") all use a 9.00/16 crossply (or bias ply) tyre on a 6.5" rim as original specification.
There seems to be only a couple of brands of tyre currently imported into Aus with 9.00 16 size, most are bar treads and very unsafe at highway speed particular on wet roads. The best being Michelin XZL 255/100R16 (9.00 16 equivalent) with a speed rating of 68MPH at about $700 each and Michelin Au reporting nil stock.
My thoughts were to investigate if any of the 35" or 36" off road radial tyres with a lower aspect ratio could be a compromise onto my standard S2B 6.5" rims. Otherwise I will need alternate tyres, the best being 8.25 16 crossply (common truck size), with a 1.5" loss of diameter and 3/4" lower ground clearence.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
No worries. Perhaps you need to look at truck, earthmover or farm tyre suppliers. They seems to have the odd sizes available... when I was looking at various tyres and patterns I had to look outside the main stream.
Unfortunately the less common sizes and patters do come at a premium.

dont bother with the stt,s in twelve months and 21,580kms mine have split tread blocks , torn complete sections of tread block off them and basically worn like chalk. the have been rotated regularly pressure adjusted to different terrains .we notified the coopers rep after tassie in january 07 he had a look and made notes now we are replacing them the new rep had a look and doesnt want to know about them .one of my mates who is not at all kind to tyres is having a great run from mtzs
I changed from STTs to MTZs last year. On the same vehicle, I found them much quieter and better rock and mud performance. They didn't loose tread blocks as easily, but seemed to wear a little faster. I still have them as a set of spares.
Cheers,
Gordon

The Mikey Thompson's look like I would need new rims.
Have sent an enquiry to the Australian contact for MRF from the site you directed me to. Has anyone any experience with Sand Grip tyres?
Just to update, Chalmers Tyres in Sydney have just given me a price for the Alliance at $380 each so I can get 2 for the price of 1 Michelin although I am still looking for other alternatives.
Cheers

I run MTZ's and I reckon they're great! Both off and on road. Excellent on the rocks,(mould nicely at low pressure) and as good as they can be in the mud! Getting good wear so far, no probs with loosing tread blocks or splitting, etc. I'd get another set for sure.
Diana, you can go wider than 235's on a 7in. rim, but not much available is taller than 235/85. Interco do a 35.5in Super Swamper TSL (SAM-53) that fits on a 6.5in rim, hope you've been saving though............
