Generally you have 3 months to do so. If as in WA they believe you have been in the state longer than that you can be booked for not changing over your rego and your drivers licence, someone from Vic will confirm this.
Hi Guys,
I'm about to move down to Vitoria and my car is currently registered here in Queensland under my mums name along with the associated insurance. Anyway, what I was wondering is, if my mum remains in Queensland and pays for the rego, can I leave my car on Queensland plates and still drive it around in Victoria?
Or do I have no choice but to change it all over and get the Victorian plates?

Same as the WA answer. If you have not changed your rego over within 3 months and you have a prang or something like that and they prove that you were living in Vic then you run the risk of not being covered by TAC. That could run into big bickies. Plus after 3 months you are deemed not to be registered by the letter of the law. Probably pay just to change it over and then it's no hassle if worst case happens.
Why the **** would you want to?? Vic reg will be heaps cheaper
i think our Reg rules are some of the slackest in the country
not bad but good![]()
130's rule
If the car remains owned and registered in your mother's name it cannot be considered to be yours for rego (if it is transferred to you, you will have to pay stamp duty), and if Victoria is like NSW they will not register a vehicle in that state with the owner's address in a different state, even if the vehicle is in another state 100% of the time, so unless you transfer the registration to your name you do not have to change it over. Mind you, this might be a good idea anyway!
