Howdy Rob , Isn't unleaded fuel with the ethanol blend 94 octane ? Don't mean to be picky but thats what it is here![]()
G,day.
There for a couple of days. Yuk.
Betty had to have her tin heart valve checked at the Base Hospital.
I decided to do a fuel check for the trip.
My Disco has a rebuilt 3.5 EFI V8. Medium weight, not overloaded.
I used only unleaded 91 with the ethanol blend.
Done 884 kilometers for the trip and averaged 17.6 lts per 100 K's.
Not bad, I thought, considering that I sat on around 120 KPH whenever I
could. Dont say it, okay.
Little Bird had a ball and gave us a running commentary the whole time !
I would have missed seing a family of Emu's off in a paddock if she hadn't
drawn our attention to them.
She saw her first big 5ft Goanna. She wasn't sure about that tho, because she is only used to the little Gecko's that we have in the house !
She was buggered tonight, I had to put her to bed early, after she
had her cup of tea.
Cheers.

Mick, on the bowser it say's unleaded 91 ?
Could be anything tho.
The reason that I use the ethanol blend is because I flash my BP discount card and get three cents per litre off. With the reciept that I ask for, I get another four cents per litre discount at my local IGA food store.
Total seven cents, it all helps, eh.
On this trip I averaged 1.29.9 cents per litre !
Premium unleaded was around 1.41.9 cents per litre. A rip off.
I always add a dash of Flash Lube valve saver with every fill, on the
advice of Trevor Harris at Land Rover Spares.
Every ten or so fills I use premium, I dont know if this adds to engine
longevity. Time will tell I guess, as long as I dont cook the donk like
I did the last time. GRRR.
Tombraider, they are good figures that you are getting.
cheers.
"Premium unleaded was around 1.41.9 cents per litre. A rip off."
On this very conundrum i did the maths for my yam 60 4st in the boat one day...
assuming Tombie used PULP at your $1.419 /L and got 13.8L/100km
and yourself used sludge at $1.299 / L and got 17.6L/100
Tombie payed $19.58 per 100km
you payed $22.86 per 100km
rip off suddenly vanishes
Using the same logic for my boat... I was getting 2.8km per L with PULP and 2.1km per L on low grade... so on $/km PULP would need to be 33% more to cost the same (which it isnt)... but the other benefit when out from Cairns... on my 75L fuel load (safety reserve not included) with PULP I have 210km range but on sludge 157km range.... and that is definately worth it...
anyways thats the maths of it
No offense or rudeness meant in this post... just figures

Steve

Olbod,
Did you get to do anything whilst here in TSVL?Travel around town or in the ranges to the North West?
Some of our push are heading your way for the long weekend, well to Homevale Park via back entry, unfortunatelly I cannot make it.
Regards,
Steve, I cant argue with your figures, but when i'm
filling up and getting a discount and then getting a further
discount at the foodstore checkout, I dont seem to get as
angry as when I have to pay much more for premium at the pump ?
Mental as anything.
If I was smarter I guess I would have been an oil company exec or an
multi national or bank CEO con man.
Then again, suppose I had filled up with only Premium at 1.41.9 cents
per litre for the trip. Would I still only average 17.6 lts per 100 K's ?
If so, what would I have paid ?
I think about $19 more for the trip
TwoUp, no I did not see anything of Townsville.
Did that ten years ago. I hate big towns anywhere. I hate going into
Mackay, too.
I stayed at the Magnetic Motor Inn on the edge of town and travelled to the Base Hospital, ( also on the southern edge of town ) just twice.
Once we got to town I dont suppose I travelled more than 10 kilometre's
around the place before we got the hell back out !
While I was waiting for the call from the Hospital, me and the chicken
watched tennis on the tube.
I like Desert, Mulga, Gidgee, Spinnifex and Wildlife. The more remote the better. I am not a people person, now !
Shame you cant get away for the long weekend.
Cheers.
If you did that and got the same economy I would be very suspect of the Premium fuel being sold!
Ethanol blends don't have the same amount of energy in them as pure dino fuels, so you will always get slightly worse economy using them.
I am of the opinion (be it right or wrong) that you shouldn't use ethanol blends because
A: the vehicle wasn't designed to run on it and
B: the energy used to produce the ethanol and the extra fuel you use more than offsets any real environmental gain.
BigJon, you could be right on all counts, who knows.
These engines can be tuned to run reasonably well on these blended fuels
these days and like it or not ethanol blends will all we will be able to
buy in the future, I think.
I dont know about the production or environmental cost of manufacturing ethanol compared to anything else, I'm afraid.
I do know that the ethanol that we use is produced here at the Sariina
Sugar and Refinery Mill.
All of the Mills here in this district use Bagasse ( a sugar by product ) to
fire the furnaces to generate the electricity used to run the Mills during
the crushing season.
They produce more electricity than they need so the excess is put into
the States grid !
What cost effect this has on ethanol manufacturing, is unknown to me
but it would be interesting to know.
We have take a trip down to Gympie soon to visit a family member
with a slow acting terminal illness. Same as what Burnie had. God knows how she got it ?
I will run a fuel check using only Premium unleaded. The results should
be interesting. Vehicle load will be the same. I should then know first
hand about how to spend my fuel dollar wisely, eh.
This will be important info because I am setting up to take a trip over
to the Gunbarrel for a couple of months, in this old Disco. It will involve thousands rather than hundreds of kilometre's.
Dollar savings will come in handy.
Cheers.
