What's your Disco worth to you?

I was passing a well known LR Specialist garage in Highbury road, Burwood, today and stopped in to look at a 130 i've been eyeing up for awhile. 2003 model TD5 with 10 thou on the clock. Barely even run in. Asking price is $42,500.

Well, says i, lets take her for a drive while they check out my beloved Disco.
I could'nt fault the 130, apart from the tyres only having half the amount of tread as the spare. When i pointed this out to the salesman, as being odd for a vehicle with only 10 000 kms on it, he pointed out that the spare was new???????? Yeah thanks for that useful info.

Anyway, the true insult was yet to come. Due to the fact that my TD5 has a full service history, 172 000Kms, 2" lift, winchbar, driving lights, roof rack, cargo barrier, snorkel and UHF and has apparently been modified surely not and may even venture off the black stuff It is apparently only worth $12 grand.
The car is in great condition and i've spent many many hours improving it. And if all i'll get for it is 12 grand i'll be spending many more hours and dollars making it even better, because i could'nt afford to buy one as good as it currently is
So the question has to be asked, what is your Disco worth to you?

    Rant over...................bloody salesmen

mine is worth alot more to me than someone would give me for it. I reckon i might get 5k trade in if i was lucky with the dent in the rear quarter, the bent rear bumper and the brush scratches in it. But if was to put a price on it to get back what i have put in, including what i originally paid for it i would say 30k, but its priceless to me and will most likely be in the family for a long while yet

Well trade in value is at least 30% to 40% less than what it is normally worth or thats how the red book used to work it out when I used to do work for some car yards around Bayswater and their excuse for this was that they do need to make money.

If you really want to get an idea of what it is worth then check it out in cars guide or something like that but it's never accurate as you never know how much one person will pay for a car against someone else if you know what I mean.

Even though Im not a huge fan of D2's, for 12k for one that young I would buy it off you.

I only ever sell privately unless I really want to get rid of a car (e.g. ZG Jeep) as if you trade it in, the car yard will just remove all the accessories that they can without it costing them anything and then they sell the accessories on ebay as well as putting the maximum price on the vehical so trading in a modded truck is to me a waste of time.

I know all this because this is what I used to do at the car yards (but they used the Trading post rather than ebay) as well as repairing cars for the least amount of money possible.

    Good luck.

I hate car salesmen with a passion

Take your prised polished possession into them, beaming with pride, and they look on it as it was a common tu*d!!

They give you a paltry sum for it and try to make you believe they are "going overboard" and their kids will have to live on vegimite sandwiches.

The two days later, they are flogging you car as a "one in a million" low km, owned by a little old lady that only drove it to church on Sundays. Not only that, they try to sell it at double of what they gave you!

In 2003, we traded our EBII Falcon on a 2002 AUIII. The EBII had 160,000km on it as was in very good condition. Ford gave us $1,200 for it. 5 Days later I saw it in a used car yard with $6,900 on the window. Two days later it was sold..

The only reason i even stopped to look at the 130 is that i'm struggling a bit with space in the D2 now that i work out of it, well, and the fact that we all like to have new toys...........
I think the Disco will be a keeper, will continue to modify it, and perhaps build me a custom trailer to suit.

My disco is priceless to me as it is currently being used as both a means to get to work and a tractor. I need about a 50hp tractor 4wd for my block (28acres virgin land) which needs to be carefully cleared for horses and living on.

a tractor big enough to do what I need is around $30K plus

a ute, work vehicle, reliable rig in one which I need is around $30k plus absolutely minimum

so my red book rated $3500 - 7000 is worth at least $60K

By the time I have finished on the block the disco may be hardly road worthy but it will have saved me 10's of thousands of dollars, and that will give me a legitimate reatson to take it off road and really finish it off like I always wanted to.

    Blythe

P.S. try using a toyota as a tractor and see how long it lasts

P.P.S. I am using the disco to clear the block so I am knocking down anything under 75mm in diameter with it and pulling a huge tyre - 3mtr dia to clear the small stuff

So I figure no matter what I win

    accessories don't really increase value.
For a dealer they like to sell stock standard, std suspension, cargo barriers removed etc etc.
Then the dealer has to make a profit when he resells your Disco, so he's not going to give you the going retail price.
You would be better off trying to sell it privately to someone that wants all the mods done. You probably get more.

Yea, i always leave a car yard feeling dirty We've got a Falcon AU11 SR with 68 thou on the clock, we want to trade it on a smaller car for my better half, only offered 7 grand for it (that was a year ago). We've still got it......
