I'm mainly interested in current vehicles although I'm still keen to understand any historic issues you guys have.

    Thanks for your help.

    BUMP!

I just did a google search for 'land rover "off road capability team"' -
land rover "off road capability team" - Google Search

    The results are interesting.

Wish I'd thought of it on the day.

LR blew its chance to make selected Ford dealers LR dealers and solve the dealer problem that way. Given the lack of Tata dealers here, the best option now would seem to me to be to choose selected aftermarket LR workshops and train and approve them to do warranty work. They might also be approved for Jags. That way you would get people who know about LRs doing the work in a lot more places around the country than is currently the case. WIth a network of approved aftermarket people in place, sales should rise considerably, which would then justify having more full dealers. This would be a positive plan for growth, rather than the current plan for decline.

A bit more attention to aftersales backup would also be good. My LR dealer here in Brisbane tyold me yesterday there is not a single example of the genuine LR gearbox inhibitor switch for my D1 in the entire country and it would have to be imported and would cost about $450. So instead we're fitting a non-genuine one for about $300. Given how often these switches fail, you'd think there would be some genuine ones in stock somewhere...

Smile Improvements on a Landy...where to start

    G'day,

The previous 290 odd posts should be great material for a product improvement team to start with. I have only had an SWB S3 and Defenders (x3) so my two bits is aimed at my expereinces. The Defender basic shape has been with us since 58 when the S2 introduced the 'bustle waist', and one would think that LR would have gotten the end product to near perfection by now.

OE brake pads that don't wear out under 10k kms.
No more crappy bits of trim that break off.
No more glued foam deadening material that unsticks as soon as you get it anywhere near Oz sun.
Improved ergonomics- move the handbrake, fit better seat frames and better dust sealing everywhere.
Lift the panel quality.....panel gaps over 3/4" in this day....a joke.
Roof and window joints that don't leak.
Dust covers on the steering swivel joints.
Fit a high lift jack as standard, and a better wheel nut spanner.
Isuzu engines... in fact anything with better power and torque, the BMW 3.0 twin turbo diesel would be a start.
Service centres that know what a landy is....R380 gearboxs are not lifed items (Nowra LR told me they were!).

    Rightio, thats it.

Has this pommie guy ever got back to you guys.
I dont think the vehicles are crap but they are certainly different,
I have worked on a lots of bits machinery over the years and they all have issues .
I hope they can survive the current economic crisis -they will certainly need to change their marketing/dealer net work -maybe focus on building custom vehicles defenders -military/mining -agricultural .
and lose some of the unreliable electrical crap
I fear all 4x4 will be se asian soon cheap nonrepairable crap.

Unwaivering reliability, so no electric windows etc, gizmo's are good in a vehicle that is not capable offroad, but have no place in the bush!.

A simple engine virtually anyone can work on, with basic knowledge (look at the Isuzu 4BD1), and overengineered, accessable, rebuildable mechanicals. Why is everything throwaway these days!.

Do something different to the norm!, build it to last!,
When I drive my 4BD1T County, I drive with confidence and trust it's reliability.
When I drive my Td5 Defender, I drive with the expectation of something going wrong.

So are you saying that the department is being wound up .... If it's going to TaTa .... Does this mean it's "Goodbye" to Landrover

I am led to believe that some departments are going to be merged or have been and jobs have been laid off.

Maybe this forum should become aulr&tto
