Looking at Buying Series 2 Disco

    First post go easy.
I currently own a current model hilux TD, but am looking at selling and buying a Series 2 Discovery TD5. I want to spend no more than about $22000. Can I get a decent TD5 for this price? What problems do I need to look out for. What mods would you recommend first up to increase offroad ability. Not into hardcore 4x4ing, just getting to out of the way camping spots, the odd beach run and every now and then an outback trip.
    Thanks in advance.

For that price you will get a good one, no mods required unless you are a fanatic and like something that looks like a "Tonka Truck". The Disco is a VERY capable vehicle as it is. No need to waste your money

    I got a good early td5 for $14990 3 years ago,198000 country ks.
Im rapt with it despite a few of the standard D2 problems.
MAKE SURE YOU GET THE UPDATE WITH THE CDL FITTED!!!!.Its the one with the new D3 style headlights.
They had alot of the early problems ironed out. Also try to get one with ACE,its the new you beaut conering enhancement Landcruiser have on the new 200 series, except it came out in 1999 on the D2,it works exceptionally well. For your$$$ you are better buying one of these with higher ks than an earlier one with no CDL and lower Ks.
Have a real good look at all the D2 posts here so yo realise what you are getting into. They can be temprimental, but most faults are well known and there is plenty of help here to sort them.

I actually sat in a disco for the first time today. Very impressed! Even more so after I took it for a drive. It does look a bit low on the front end... Do people tend to have ground clearance problems with standard suspension or did it just look lower than it actually was?
    Thanks Mick

In my experience people change the rubber and seem to benefit from a 2 inch lift. Also, I believe getting a bullbar fitted gives slightly better approach angles.

Which year models can I be sure will have a CDL and ACE or were they only factory options?

Hi Hillbilly, from august 2001 build date they don't have CDL internals until the revised model with the spiffy headlights - D2 b.I believe the D2's before aug 01 have the internals for CDL but no actuator lever inside the car. You can spend up to $2500 for the internals to be fitted for the post aug 01 models or about $600 for the models that require just the actuator. ACE was a factory option

Wait till you get one off-road if it impresses you on the road.
A mate has an 4.2 diesel80 Series with a 2" lift,I do too.Mine handles better, has plenty more articulation, heaps more power and uses LOTS less fuel.
Must admit,I do like FatBazs 80ser,but you need to spend a heap to get them as capable/powerfull/economical as a D2 Disco.Mine was $14990 with 198000ks,1999 model. His was $28990 with 240000ks,1998 model!!!!!!!!
