I've only seen them on the front of FC-101's and as for 'normal' Land Rovers, only on armoured 110's (used in Ireland) photos only, never seen one in the flesh...
exactly how rare are they?

In Australia VERY! Other than in 101s. Very few 1 Ton Series 3 came here.
Still kick myself that I did not grab one I came across twenty years ago. I know of one that was made here but had removable swivel balls for a 4WD racer - don't know what happened to it though. It wasn't that difficult for a diff specialist to make - don't try it at home though.

One Tons were always rare and even rarer in Australia - I have never seen one, nor for that matter the ENV.

for a fair while in the mid-late 90's a dealer advertising in LRO in the UK had 20-25 rolling chassis for sale with salisbury front diffs, rang them once to find out what the story was, cant remember specifics but they were ex MOD but not from armoured 110's
was a bit wierd though, no bodywork, but all the mechanicals were there.....
Rare enough that I am building my own rather than buying one!!!
not counting 101's I've seen 3 in 10 years of looking. All of them Coiler versions. There is a local gent who claims to have one for a Series... I suppose I'll have to go look.
