Thumbs up get it back on the road and save your money

stick with LT 77, get it back on the road then look at your leisure for any replacement, you might be able to save up some money instead of going into debt.

talk to toorak tractor at moorabin or somewhere down that way. they did up my R380 for about half of what others were quoting.

Yeah have to agree this would be the best option, at least get another box and build a good one from all the best bits. Then as said before at your leisure look for a replacement if you still want. Surely you can use some internals from a V8 lt77 ?

THe other option would be to rebuild the box yourself if your slightly mechanically inclined

Yes there are lots of bits in a gearbox and some of which you may need a press to get in or out but most of what you will need to change you could buy the new bits from LR and fit your self if you give yourself enough time and space to place it out properly.

Best way if you havnt pulled something appart before and you want to get it back together is to lay it out how it came out and that way it is just a matter of finding what is broken, replacing that and putting everything back in reverse.

You may already know all this but I thought it might help someone, after youve pulled a few different Gboxes apart you pretty much end up throwing everything in a box and just taking note of what is different.

    Hi Joel,

I had a similar 'should i trade up' thought a year or so ago. In my case, nothing had broken on my Tdi, but it was up for the 200k service and the idea of a newish TD5 or new Defender was in my mind.

I don't have anywhere near the modifications on the Tdi as you, but after pondering for a few weeks I decided to keep the Tdi for these reasons:

1). The TD5 doesn't offer me a great deal of extra off-road ability or drive pleasure over the Tdi. Traction control and more grunt would be nice, but for the extra swap-over price I could get front and rear lockers and map the fuel pump plus a few other bits and pieces. And the Tdi seems the less complex mechanical option.

2). Defenders are great, but they cost way too much second hand (thats not a bad thing, goes to show that they are well thought of vehicles).

Even though you may have to spend a few thousand for the new gearbox, it's something that you (hopefully) only need to do once, then you can enjoy the D1 for many years to come .. and be happy that you don;t need to set aside money for a similar thing to happen to the TD5 that you may buy.

    Best of luck

You already know that you're not going to get a replacement truck with all the good bits you've got on yours. Just think what it will cost you to buy another vehicle and get it to the point you've got yours, Except the busted gearbox of course.
Better the devil you know in my opinion, if you get the job done right it'll be one less thing you may have to do in the future. There would be no guarantee's with any replacement vehicle you bought.

As some of you may know the gearbox in my Discovery failed (officially on the 20/12/07). It has been laid up since. It can still be driven (minus 1st) but I've avoided it whilst its spitting out slabs of metal.

As much of my driving now is around town (It is used for work too) ideally I would like an automatic trans.

I've looked at a few 1997 + 1998 auto diesels (and pulled out of two potential upgrades) for the following reasons:

1/ I'm up for $2500 to get the current Disco into a saleable state. I'd be very lucky to get $6000 for it, so already we're at $3500. A nice 97/98 would be around 9.0-10k... so an upgrade would effectively put me $6500 out of pocket.

2/ Better the devil you know than the one you don't know. I've done a lot of work to my Disco and its in excellent condition. A lot of people comment how well preserved it is. I've also spent a fair bit on it.

    5 new ATs
    Updated sound system
    Privacy glass
    4 new gas shockers
    4 new brake discs
    new pads all round
    EGT gauge
    Turbo timer
    new radiator
    rebuilt intercooler
    new injectors
    fully serviced recalibrated injector pump
    new fuel hoses
    new steering dampener
    dual batteries
    new rubber bushes all round
    new timing belt
    new crankshaft pulley
    new alternator
    genuine electric front windscreen
    cargo barrier
    discovery "handbag"
    keyless entry system
mores as it comes to hand.

I've lined up a few options but I really have NFI which to do.

1/Replace the damaged LT77 with an automatic and keep the car. - this has been lined up and will cost $4000~

2/Rebuild the current LT77, then flog the lot and buy an auto - $2500~ to repair. Then another $6000 to find a decent one

3/Replace the LT77 with an R380 and keep the car - $3000~ (Better than an LT77 but not really what I'm after)

How much have you ever lost on a coin toss? Call it gents...
Fit the Auto and keep the car, resale value is killing us and with fitting the Auto you know you have a good box and many K's of enjoyable use, all you need now is some ARB lockers, Go the Auto, Regards Frank.

Will you do it yourself? Have you got the tools and space? Have you got the time?

If so, I reckon keep the present car, ring TRS in Adelaide and talk to Phil, line up a used (or reco) auto box AND EVERYTHING THAT GOES WITH IT, including rear main oil seal and gasket.

Perhaps offer up your present assembly (box and bell housing, clutch and flywheel, slave and pedal box, etc) as part trade.

The only research you need to do is work out the sequence of events and I assure you, if you do it properly, it'll take some time!!!

    Good luck and HTH.

similar ponderings myself as my bonnet and roof paint is shot. In the end I think i'll keep mine get the paint fixed add a couple of lockers and snorkel and be ahead. All other Disco's i've looked at have been either overpriced or i'd have to spend too much to bring them upto the same spec as mine. Fix her up and you'll probably be happier in the long run. If not a couple of years down the track 2007 model defenders might be in the right price range.
