manual box in this any good to you?
Whatever money you put into it will be money lost. So put whichever gearbox into it that will make you keep the vehicle the longest.
However if it were me I'd wreck it out and buy a 300tdi auto Disco (If I had the room).
Aren't you the guy who is about to start uni though? If so wouldn't funds dictate what you can fit?

The Gearbox could be just as stuffed as the one he has got, whether he fits manual or auto, fitting a rebuilt box is the way to go, my preference is an Auto, they are so much easier on the drivetrain in off road situations, and helps with Turbo lag in city driving, Regards Frank.
I've got a stuffed LT77 here.
If you want it to do up, come and get it.
All I ask is for your stuffed one later.
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. Thanks for offers of help too, I'll get back to a few people via PM on Monday and Tuesday.
FWIW I've lined up a few later model diesel automatics to look at tomorrow. I guess I'll have more news this time tomorrow![]()

Your answer is here
Its been listed 3 times now, so I'd be thinking he's negotiable![]()
LT77s aren't the best, if you're going top keep the car for a while, go for an R380. You won't regret it. Stronger, syncho on reverse, etc.
Regards

p.s. you might regret getting a R380 out of a Defender, that won't fit..
Okay, looked at a nice Tdi auto 97 today and took the thing in for a RWC check. Nothing too serious problematic, so it could be a goer.
Only thing that alarmed me - this is the first diesel auto I have driven (properly) and I was worried about how sluggish it was pulling away - the first 10 metres were terrible, but once moving it pulled really nicely. My 200Tdi manual though launches away far better. That said, mine is tweaked and I reckon the valve clearances on the auto might have needed doing.
