Nissan Patrol Zd30

the little experience I've had with the nissan diesels indicated to me, at least, that the 4.2 td would be more than adequate for anything i would want....

over extensive mileages I've found the petrol car motors (eg. VG33) to be very reliable and relatively cheap to run

and I like landrovers 'cause they are interesting ... not 'cause they are reliable

I couldn't in my wildest imaginings call a nissan or toyo interesting:)

And the 4.2 Patrol runs the same injection pump as the 300tdi I believe so no doubt a decent diesel tuner could make a big difference

That bloke is obviously a bit sensitive! Mind you he doesn't deserve an answer after his disgraceful reply, and probably wont get one.

A friend of mine who we do a lot of travelling with has a 4.2 td. It is a solid engine with good torque for towing although does tend to overheat up ranges and only gets around 7 kms/l normal driving. The rear door cracked at the base of the window which was replaced by Nissan with the owner just paying to have it painted. He is going back to Toyo for his next car. Apart from those things, it's been a pretty good car.

Yep, TD42 and TD42T are legendary for reliability. Dead simple design and a 3" exhaust transforms them. The pump adjustments are as easy as a Tdi.

I'm convinced the cooling issues are an airflow problem, as a simple add of silicone to the fan clutch generally fixes the problem.

Yeah, it'll be intersting to see if they've addressed the reliabilty issues of the ZD30 on the new 3.0 CRD engine.
I know a few blokes that work in the mines around here that grabbed the last of the TD42T's before they disappeared. (and almost universally fitted 3" exhausts)

I've had several 4.2 Diesel Patrols. My last one had 550,000 km on the clock when I sold it and is still going strong today. Yes, they are old technology and it was no rocket but it still went better than a 300TDI with way more bottom end torque. They are built to last with dual oil and air filters. The gearboxes are fantastic and put the best Land Rover gearboxes to shame. No clunks, no whines, nothing ever breaks. The diffs and axles are virtually indestructible and the LSD stays tight indefinitly. They were the most capable, reliable and dependable vehicles I've ever owned.

Yes, some of the other engine options were less than wonderful, but dont be too quick to criticise.............

4.2 na has allmost identical power and torque to the 300tdi so no i wouldent realy call it outstanding for its size

still far superior to a 300Tdi off idle. The TD42T isn't quite as good at idle as the NA version, but a pump tweak can fix that.

Fuel economy, wellllllll. :rolleyes:
My tweaked Tdi in a heavy 130 with a load flogs a stock GU 4.2TD Patrol empty, and gets better fuel economy to boot, but I still wish I had the off idle torque of the Pootrol. Can't beat displacement.

Mark, the later TD42's (GU's ) don't have the dual air filters, which is dumb. The air cleaner is a smaller than a 300Tdi now, which shows that Land Rover hasn't cornered the market on cheque book engineering.

What's up with Nissan? :o Anyone who turned out cars like the Datsun 120y/180B, Sunny, Pintara, Bluebird, didn't deserve to last. With debts of about $14 billion many years ago they were bought by Renault. Had a mate with an early Patrol diesel(1982?) wot a dog of a vehicle. Glad I bought an old Rangie then and not one of them. Why don't they get better?? Don't let any Patrol drivers pick on your Landy :D
