    The County from hell

Today I received the following PM from abaddonxi:

    Hey Chucaro

Is this you or should you buy it?

4WD Wagons (SUVs) For Sale: LAND ROVER COUNTY on Trading Post Online

    and my reply was:
Mate this is the County that I had a look in the Sunshine Coast for $ 2000 ono !
I cannot believe it! some body few streets from home bought it and now he is selling the bomb.
it requires heaps of work and being in the beach all the time before. Rust everywhere.

Beware of the County from hell ! do not drive heaps of Km for a heaps of problems and the new owner likes to make $ 2000 profit on it

I agree with Chucaro it has a lot of rust but amazingly the fire wall still appears intack, not for long though. I had a look at it on Saturday just gone. Appeared to run well. So quiet and smooth compared to the isuzu (well mine anyway). If any one wants some pics of it i took some while i was there. Not worth $4500 anyway.

To give you a sense of market value, I recently bought a V8 110 County in good shape with very little rust for $2,150. It came with near new 33 inch tyres and a suspension kit, with a very good interior. It had been on the market for a while.

The point is that diesels are sought after and hold their value well, especially as they are relatively scarce. The V8s are valued by people who really want a V8 engine but don't want a Range Rover. Otherwise they are good for spare parts for the diesels, but only if they are cheap and fairly rust free. In my view a rusty V8 is only worth buying if you need some specific non-rusting part or accessory it has fitted and can get it very cheap. The one you are talking about sounds like it would be worth about $500.

Yes, $ 500 will be just reasonable if you like to use it for some spares.
What are you saying about the V8 is interesting, because they giving the possibilities of purchasing a Isuzu turbo with little km and finish with a top vehicle under $ 10000.
Perhaps after I moving that will be the way to go for me and keep the Disco during the rebuilding of the County

He probably has a definition of "Good Condition" means somewhere hideen away on his page. I once nearly bought some CDs of an Amazon seller who rated their CDs as Brand new, Nearly, Excellent and Good. At the bottom of his page he explained the meaning of the definitions. It went something like this:

Brand New: Never Played. Still in original Case and wrapping.
Nearly New: Has original case. Few light scratches on CD surface.
Excellent: Original case damaged. Some heavy scratches on CD surface.
Good: Heavy Damage to Case. Deep scratches and marks on CD. May skip/may not play.

Luckilly I spotted this before proceeding to the checkout.

I agree with the comments about the value of rusty V8s, but it is worth noting that for any pre-Defender 110s, the market is so thin that prices are very erratic. If you need to sell one in a hurry, you will not get a reasonable price, and someone will get a bargain, but if you are in no hurry to sell, you may well be able to get twice the price for a worse vehicle.

And, as commented, the diesels tend to be even scarcer on the ground - most of the people with them are simply not interested in selling!

I agree with you John, a County diesel well look after is perhaps better vehicle than a later model Defender.
I was very impressed with my old 1978 109 V8 regarding the strength of the body compared to the later Defenders.
The County is much superior vehicle than the 109 regarding suspension, stirring and other things.

Buying a V8 in good shape and converting it into an Isuzu turbo is definitely one way to go, but you may not get a lot of change out of $10,000. First of all you'll need to make sure that everything on the V8 donor vehicle is in good shape. Not just chassis, firewall & body corrosion but suspension, driveline, tyres etc as well. Lots of little things that can really add to the cost of the donor vehicle.

Then you need to find an engine and set it up to fit into the County. This involves finding or making a lot of parts if you use a truck diesel as a donor, or buying a 4BD1 from a Land Rover wreck and turbo charging it. Things like getting the gearbox ratios right and finding a bell housing and 12 volt starter motor can really add up.

It is probably best to start with an Isuzu County if you can find one and fix it up over time.
