if its the same sort of money i'd do it
well atleast you get to work during daylight hours and then you get the eye candy as a bonus![]()
Hi all,
Ive been offerd a new job. My currrent job is a security Patrol officer (no, not a bouncer)
Ive had a gut full of dealing with the dirtbags of this area, night shift all the time, cops etc and I was looking for a change but not sure what and I ran into our local Holden dealer owner one nght while doing my rounds.
He offerd me the used car sales job in Hamlton, and Im still thinking about it but need to talk about it here to get my head around the offer so I can make my mind up either way.
Ive done the whole for and against on paper thing, but I value members ideas so what do you think?
Sales job is only award wages at around the $16-$17 ph mark but I would get 10% of the profit margin on a sale, 9-5:30 Monday to Friday with one Saturday morning per month (9-12:30), a few shirts and use of a car from the lot, but Im guessing I will pay for fuel etc and the boss seems like a pretty good bloke, down to earth no BS (Ive had alot to do with him in the past) plus you dont last in any busness here if you rip people or stuff them around.........
As far as the security go's its getting rougher around here now , more drugs and more plain dickheads around, shiftwork all the time, boss's that are hopless in every way possible and most of the time a boring job, so Im over it after 6 years. And about the same money as the sales job, just 4 nights of 10hr shift's........
Also they selling about 10 cars per week at the moment without any staff at the Used car area (its 200m away from the main dealership) and the target is at least 3 per week, so I dont thing there is the need for the big sales push or no need to worry to much about pressure from the boss to sell which I was worried about at the start.
The boss just wants someone honest, reliable , loves cars and is happy to talk to people re the cars without "talking ****" (his words), talking down to female drivers and can just help people in general.....and if I get a sale thats a bonus.
Some will say that all used car sales staff are the biggest *****s in the world, but things are differant in the bush (though of course there will always be DH sale's people) as i said before and I get much more respect as a Vol firefighter than I do as a "Rent A Cop", so maybe time for a change.

130's rule
There's an opportunity to learn the business. Maybe then you can move onto selling new Land Rovers.
Hang on, you'd be no good as a Land Rover salesman. You'd probably (a) know somehting about them and (b) be interested in selling them.
Getting away from dirtbags would be good -as would lessening the risk of injury

Andrew,
Anything would be better than having to fight with drug addicts/thieves at night
Go the sales pitch, 9 to 5.30, asleep at night, more family time.
Living in the country and bing known for your other job, you will have far more respect from others than you would in a city. City salesmen can rip you off, country folk don't expect that from others that they know and live near
Cheers
Changing jobs to a new field is always stressful - moving from familiar surrounds to wondering if you can do it, etc.
I moved from 37 years in international telecommunications dealing with ship owners, submarine cable repairers, solicitors and financial agreements, barristers and litigation, to sitting in a signal box controlling trains.
Much more relaxed (albeit much less money)

I'd go the change but then again I'm thinking of it myself. This company is so full of crap I'm drowning in it.
A friend once told me that "if you wake up hating the thought of going to work for more than 2 weeks (in a row), its time to find another job"
Most people never get to do the job they always dreamed of, some have and found it more like a nightmare, while others have and will never look back.
The important thing is to enjoy work as much as you can and enjoy your family more.
If the $$ arent an issue, make the change and be happier.
Just remember that salesmen who don't make sales don't keep a job. You will have to sell dogs to wood ducks and along the way deceive them. This is the nature of the business. You will have to sell vehicles they don't want to people who can't afford them.
You will have to keep silent as the finance sharks jack people into money traps.

If your working for a half decent dealership then ignore the above, it's a load of crap.
Finance is also usually dealt with by the business manager, your job is to get the sales contract finalised etc.
It is actually a reasonably good job. Especially if you like being around cars. You get to meet, mostly, nice people and in the sort of environment you describe you actually get to help them.
The bigger delaers don't sell bombs, or if they do they are just cheap to get rid of them. They usually wholesale them off because they don't want the hassle, that's what bomb yards are for.
go figure...... im having similar issues after having been asked to take an identical position, but on a salary and 55 hours a week, averages out to around $54k a year including typical comission
at the moment my boss is making it difficult for me to choose to stay where i am
