THE owner of a $375,000 Bentley was lucky to survive when he rolled his car almost 80 metres through swampland at Newstead early Saturday morning.
Inspector Dan Keating, Regional Duty Officer Metro North, said the Bentley Continental GT crashed through a fence on Breakfast Creek Road around 2.20am, careered three metres down an embankment, and then rolled end over end before finally settling in half a metre of water, facing the opposite direction.
The 29-year-old Teneriffe man miraculously walked out of the vehicle, and ambulance crews arriving at the scene found him dazed and disoriented on the raised dirt access road to the old Newstead gasworks.
The Bentley's owner was twice saved by good fortune when the car settled right side up, rather than trapping the occupant upside down in the shallow mire.
Insp Keating said the driver was extremely lucky to escape the crash.
"It's clear it could have been quite serious," he said.
"We believe this vehicle involved in this accident has been travelling at speed along Breakfast Creek Road.
"It's left the road and gone into the industrial area, causing quite substantial damage to the vehicle."
Local residents reported seeing the car speeding up and down Breakfast Creek Road between Montpelier Road and Eveyln Street several times, and Ashley Ripper said the car had already lost control once before it crashed through the fence.
"He lost control the first time when he went up and over the median strip, and lost fluid all over the road," she said.
"There were sparks everywhere."
The Bentley was travelling towards the city when it failed to negotiate a bend in the road about 100 metres before the intersection with Montpelier Road, crashing through an overgrown fence and tumbling to the swampland below.
Insp Keating said investigations were continuing as to whether the car had any other occupants at the time of the crash.
"There was no one in the car when it was pulled out, but we're making enquiries to see whether anyone left the scene by the time we got here," he said.
Ambulance crews transported the Bentley's driver to the Royal Brisbane Hospital for further checks, and a blood sample was also taken for further analysis.

That would be a we tad embarrassing I think. Some people don't deserve cars.
