    Is a 12mm Socket the same as a 5/32" ?

    Hi All

    Over time I have lost a 12mm socket, (of a relatively good brand) and I want to replace it to keep a full set, I don't need it for a specific reason, yet.

    Anyhow I have tried getting the replacement:
    12mm Plug Socket, (the long one with the rubber grommet) with a 1/2" drive.

    I seem to be having a hard time buying one and the local tool place suggested the same socket but an imperial equivalent of 5/32 would be the same.

    So would this be:
    • the same size, it'll be right
    • so close it doesn't matter
    • Keep searching for the right size, you'll end up stripping a nut.
    Ta

    It's a worry when one has to do some basic maths for someone.

    5/32" = 0.15625"

    12mm = .47244"

    A bloody big difference!

    Maybe you meant 15/32" = 0.46875"

    therefore 15/32" is 3 thou smaller than 12mm - not enough to worry about.

    But would that 3 thou stop it fitting on a 12mm not/bolt head/whatever?
    Depending on tolerances it just might, though in many cases it would be OK

    Yes I did mean 15/32, thanks for that.

    re: the maths, I know what you mean, yes it is a worry!
    I was one of the generation that was taught in school, (UK) imperial then metric then left school and found the real word still used imperial but was slowly changing to metric, it confused the hell out of me, it still does.
    It was only a few years ago that the UK got rid of the pound as a legal weight.

    Now I measure distance in Kilometers, smaller distances in yards.
    Area : acre / yards
    Weight: stones/pounds, less than say an ounce in grams
    Length: (bits of wood/rope etc):yards and inches but less than an inch it's mm
    Liquid Volume: gallons and pints, but here I'm multi-skilled and can use L too .
    Speed: happy with MPH & KPH

    It's not that I can't use both but if someone said, "how long is that bench" I would immediately just look and think 2 1/2 yards then have to think hmmm that's a bit over 2m.
    I think I just got crossed wires in my head somewhere

    6mm=1/4",13mm=1/4" Whitworth, 14mm=9/16", 16mm=5/8", 17mm=11/16", 19mm=3/4".
    10mm is close to 3/8", 11mm is close to 7/16"

    I take it you are discussing a socket for 12mm spark plugs? These are 5/8" AF, and the socket for 14 mm spark plugs is 13/16" AF.
