I mentioned in Wannalandies Which welder thread, that I had used my oxy to customise my Mini Cooper S. Found an old polariod pic of it taken in
1971 just after I finished it. I spent ten years in the big smoke during
the seventies.
It started life as a Mini 850. I bought a Mini Cooper S that had been
rear ended and written off. I transferred the whole front sub assembly
and all of the Cooper S bits.
If you remember, the Mini's had body seams about a half inch wide and
the panels spot welded. I completely removed all of these seams and re-
welded the complete body shell.
Fabricated the double curved flares and welded them in.
Finished it off with five coats of black dulon with a red pinstripe along
the sides. It looked beautiful. I was a big fan of John Leffler who raced the blue Cooper S. I built Mine as a replica of his, tho kept it
roadworthy.
The inside was stripped, The bonnet and boot lid were fibreglass.
I re-worked the engine a tad and it went like the clappers.
It was my daily driver and I loved it.
I kept it for a few years, then bought Phase 1 HO Falcon.
Wish I still had them both.
Cheers.
PS: In those days I had teeth, it was beaut as they worked a bit like a paling fence, and stopped stuff from falling outa me face !
Gees, you should see the front of me T shirt now after I've had a feed, eh.
Olbod, I remember a friend of mine had a cooper s with a VERY worked engine, all i remember about it is it was 1310cc and had a webber carby.
Cornered like it was on rails, and the wheelspins it could do in 1st, 2nd and a bit in 3rd blew me away!
I'd love one now!
