Yesterday the 2a refused to start - starter just spinning instead of engaging. I've been there before!

Pull the starter off (it is possible to pull it forward round the exhaust pipe - just) then clean up the multistart thread the pinion runs on and lubricate it with graphite.

I really must find a wading plug!
