This is the classic french car film Rendezvous.
Filmed in Paris at 5 am, in a Ferrari, there is nothing fake about it.
If you look hard in one scene there's a dog that thinks twice about coming out that morning !

"Rendezvous" doubtless inspired this Nissan ad "The Run", which was flimed in Prague but under controlled conditions.

This has been used recently as a clip for a music video (I forget the name) and it was sped up a bit there to fit the length of the song.
Interestingly, other than a few straight stretches (Champs Elysee) he is not actually going that fast. It is amazing how quick it can look being filmed from bumper height - the pedestrian crossings however are a bit of a give away. You can't judge by the linemarkings as they are quite a bit closer together than ours. The sound overdub also makes it feel faster with high revving and screeching tyres.
There is a rumour that it was actualy filmed on a motorbike - which could have even the case since in a few shots the headlight beam does not have much spread.
Here's a link to a site where some geeks have tried to map the speed of the driving from timed intervals along the route...
Speed of a Car: C'était un Rendezvous
As I mentioned, there are some fast, straight stretches - 220km/h??? maybe - but the majority is at quite realistic speeds.
The Run just doesn't capture the same soul and passion of the original.
It was rumoured to be Jacky Ickyx driving.
I thought the sound was real not overdubbed ? I thought that was an urban myth.

For the era and technology, I think a gyroscope stabilised movie camera was pretty damn good. I can't honestly see how they would ever have scored a clean live soundtrack however. Besides, tyres don't really screech like that on wet cobblestones and there would have been a hell of a lot more crashing and bumping over imperfections in the road surface (which you can in fact hear all through the Nissan rip-off clip).
