    Question Tyres

About to replace my BFG All Terrains on Defender. I've been happy with them and thinking if it ain't broke why fix it but was considering Mud Terrains. I get into the bush pretty much every week or so in Tassie and winter's coming up. Wet, mud, snow but followed again by summer. I use the car everyday so much bitumen but much bush. Torn between everything! Anybody feel strongly (but has practical experience of what you talk about not just opinion or theory - please)about anything related to this subject? I do about 30k a year. Cheers.

    Tyres

I am now on my 3rd set of Muddies. Love them. They are ponderous on bitumen. I change pressures regularly as I enter different terrain and road types. It is a daily drive as well and copes with this. I run with minimum of 500kg weight on board daily and of course heavier on trips, especially extended trips. I like At's as well but have not had them on my own Defender.
    Hope this helps,

Peter what sort of Klm's are you getting out of you M/T's I have BFG AT's and 2 are due for replacement as well, and am going through same dilemma. My AT's last just over a 100000klm so very happy in this regard. Problem is that I want to go from 235/70 to 245/75 but have 2 perfectly good tyres on the front, which will go to waste. (and I love procrastinating).

    I have a D2 and have 265/75/16 Goodyear MTRs
I have done 50,000 + kays and theyve only worn 3mm in that time (14mm brand new)
So in that regard you should get 130,000 + kays out of them before having to replace them
I tow a trailer 650 + kilos every day and have 2 blokes and myself in the car
These tyres are Awesome off road and great on road for a mud tyre they would be a great choice in my book
I run these tyres at 40 psi on road constantly.

I think the thing to do is get a 2nd set of rims - look out on ebay. Put your Muds on them - and use where applicable. For the times on road - use your original tyres. In the long run you will save money doing this.

I agree, that's what I do. Plus you feel a bit safer at 110 kph on tyres that aren't bruised & knocked around.

Assuming its one set only, and if you're happy with the performance of All Terrains, then muds will be brilliant offroad. On road there is a price to pay in noise, steering response etc, buts its not that bad.

BFGS are good, but I think Goodyears are now better. As already recommended & in my experience MTRs are a much better compromise tyre.

And BFG muds as we know them are on the way out. New pattern, new construction, new technology is coming. I wouldn't pay top dollar for current BFG muds. MTRs yes.

BFG All terrains and at least 1 diff lock for most applications, Mud terrains if you play in deep sticky mud regularly.

The Muddy's are great, Ive known plenty of guys who have had them for many years and have done really well although I have followed then through most of the places that we thought the AT's wouldnt get through but have done it, maybe not in style or as easilly as the muddys but they have got there.

I wanted Muddy's when I replaced them the last time but the Mrs didnt like the Idea of the extra noise and slight loss in handling that our mates have noticed with the change.

I'd be inclined to agree that another set of wheels with some play tyres for those times you know you will be in need of them would be a better idea and just replace 2 of the AT's for now for on the road.

Maxis muddys are popular around my mates at the moment (one of them is an agent for them lol so they are all getting them cheap) but some guys have some Simex's, Mickey T's or the like.

You will have them for years as you wont use them all that often and you will always have a spare set for if the road set run out when you dont have the money to replace them aswell.

I had a couple of sets of BFG A/T's when my county was a driven daily and as you say very happy with them but they chipped a lot when off roading and clogged up in mud/clay so I changed to BFG M/T's I'm just replacing them again with muddies, they did scolop on the edges a bit(big lugs do)and may not have got the mileage of the A/T as you'd expect but off road I think their much better. Its really up to you and what you need most, good manners on road or better grip off. I tried the 2 sets of rims thing but got sick of swapping them,so now start of winter and boggy tracks just around the corner lots of grip by next summer half warn then new tyres for next winter perfect.

I have 2 sets of BFGs: A/T and M/T. Can't compare to other brands. One thing I've discovered, with muddies the fuel consumption changes +1L/100km; tested on different pressure, noticable on highway. Nothing to do with offroad, revs, hard foot etc. Simply +1 liter.

Anybody else have this issue or just me?
