    Unhappy I need a hug

    Hi
After reading all the horror stories about TD5 engines, heads/gaskets, bolts that fall out of oil pumps causing $18 to $20 K rebuild bills, oil in ECU's and wiring looms a couple of g's every 2 years what's going on? Am I having a bad dream, I've had landies since 1968 and had plenty of troubles crook gearboxes / axles etc. but these TD5 troubles seem something else again. Have 2000 fender converted to auto, no major dramas so far apart from new injector loom and turbo, waste gate stuck open, sounds a good move to put it up blocks and leave it there before something very serious happens

FFS...... what is it with people and anything new on Land Rovers. The td5 is a very good engine as was the tdi, but things have to keep pace.. Yes its more complicated, but so what.... The few issues that have been experienced are well known and should all have been sorted by now...

I am absoloutley sick of this anti td5 cr*p.. For Heavans sake Rover v8s have been fuel inected since 1985 odd and people dont bitch about that.

I am tempted to sell mine and buy a gu patrol just to avoid the 'I wish I had leafsprings still mentality' ...

If you want a td5 buy one.. If you dont. Dont.

oooh its got a few sensors... it must have been created by the devil....

This post isnt directed at anyone but things move on and in all honesty the td5 isnt that complicated or unreliable!

These posts on forums just extend the myth that there are more issues that there really are....

    I agree Pete,

Also, the comments in the first post are quite an exageration, and from my experiences and probably most others, the TD5 is an excellent and reliable motor. Just like all of the Landy diesels, you must look after it.

Head gaskets is collateral damage after an overheat, and the overheat is usually due to an engine trauma. If you install a coolant level sensor you can safe guard yourself against this.

Oil pump bolts, will have been loctited back in during service, and if it wasn't then you will have been one of the rare ones to have this fail. $18 - $20k repair isn't likely, especially when a low km TD5's are selling for about $4000. It's not a problem.

Injector looms every 2 years??? Maybe. They're about $250

Don't sweat about it. Anyway, a true luddite still rides a horse because there is less to go wrong.... or is there.
    Cheers

just don't ask me how much SWMBO's main GG is worth, and what can go wrong and if it's serious how you can't just plug a new bit in to fix it......

Give me a TD5 any day

Totally agree, when a GG gets sick it can cost up to the cost of a new TD5 and you still have to pay to feed the thing even though you cannot enjoy it till it's fixed.

Smile I like my TD5 Defender

So my Defender 110 TD5 is 9 years old now.
(It was one of the first shipments in Oz!)
Yes its got a few issues (or some unique style!),
nothing major, just build issues, thats how they are.

So I've got to replace the fuel pump now, 'cause its screaming its head off!!!
    - big deal, its been in use for 9 years now, it can't run without it, I've just got to do it and move on.

So I was unlucky and had a pinhole develop in the head, and lost most of the coolant, but at the time was in Melbourne.
The workshop I went to moved planets (nah not really!), but did everything they could to get us on the road again within a week.
    - That included sourcing another head from Sydney, having it sent down, tested, exchange all the stuff into it, etc.
While it was in the shop it had a major service done, and was re-tuned (chipped) as well, at my request.

This was not related to the head gasket in any way, and I've never had an issue with that.

Oil in the harness never effected my driving of the vehicle, but it was done under a factory service.

All in all it is still a great vehicle, just with its own characteristics !

Have to say that is not called for. If people have concerns help allay them dont bitch about them. I have to say if I was buying a new car I would want to know the truth about faults so I could make an informed decision.
