Jack Absalom DVDs at ABC shops

The ABC shops are selling a 4 DVD box set of Jack Absalom stuff – Birdsville Track, Strezlecki Track, Sturt, (basically Packsaddle to Innamincka) & the Kimberleys.

Haven’t played them all yet, but its really interesting seeing how things have changed since 1985. And of course a bit reminiscent.

    Some points noted so far:

    - Where’s his Landrover? This Sigma wagon is out of place.

    - The highlight for me is the footage of the trains running in Maree. Those off-red NSU locos that were never recovered.

    - Birdsville pub was a bit sparse. No footy tipping boards etc on the walls.

    - There’s only a few secs of footage, but the Innamincka AIM hospital was still in ruins at that stage.

    - There’s no reference to a shop at Camerons Corner. I would have thought the original store would have been erected by then?

    - The artesian bores are a huge, free, wonderful resource that’s the saviour of the land. Well before the cap & pipe management of today.

    - Generally there’s a lot of good background history that I didn’t know about say Cordillo Downs, gold mining, the introduction of clay topped roads etc.

    - I didn’t recognise either Depot Glen or Cooper Creek. I guess Sturt could have camped up & down for say a mile, not just where today’s sign is. And Coopers Creek was either very low then and/or he was fishing in the upper reaches near the choke somewhere.

    - I get a bit sick of “how to tell the direction from the sun” stuff. Although to be fair, I didn’t you could get east & west from the moon.

All in all its good fun. Highly recommended if you like this sort of DVD.

    Regards

I remember watching those when they were broadcast on TV. Some great viewing.

Not sure what you mean by the original shop at Cameron Corner. AFAIK the shop that is there now, which appeared in the 90's is the one and only. As for the AIM Hospital it too was rebuilt with support from Australian Geographic in I think, the late 90's.

We used to have a set of Jack's tapes in the car, they'd get played over and over on family trips. Learnt heaps about how to fix gaskets (plum jam) and to point your gun at the floor when you have it in the cab with you.

The car was nicked once, recovered in Newcastle - they'd left the tapes for us and taken everything else.

We always used to get a kick out of his advice if you ever got stuck in the Outback :

"Take the wheels of your car and burn a tyre every morning. Because the first thing a station owner does in the morning is look around the horizon"

    Or words to that effect.

Yeah I remember those - wow I didn't realise it was that long ago.

    Highlights I remember:
    • Starting the Sigma on D cell batteries,
    • Starting a fire with steel wool and jumper leads
    • Starting the car by jacking up the rear wheel and rapping a rope around it - started like a victa!

But the best tip I recall, and have followed ever since, is to have a pack of cards in the tool box.
When you are stranded, have a cuppa, play some patience and before to long someone will lean over your shoulder and say "put the red jack on the black queen" and you're saved

    Thumbs up Jack Absolum

Yes his tips are great. If any member gets the chance check out his gallery in Broken Hill He is very talented Aussie artist. I went through Broken Hill expecting to stay a couple of days .Finished up there for nearly 2 weeks. It would have to be one the best Heritage spots in Australia , even though its in moon scape country.....Cheers

    Jack's Landrover

I grew up around Broken Hill, didnt know him personally, but knew his family and knockabouts. As far as I recall he never had a land rover and he used to go into some pretty tough country to paint. Pro Hart was the same, the places he would take his roller into would shame some 4x4 owners. Come to think of it there was a gang of bastards from the bush.......actually there was a travelling exhibition some years back called "artists from the bush" which featured a number of BH artists, who all travelled deep into the bush for their inspirations........and I'm sure none of them had a 4x4.
