You are right...I lived through the 06/07 bushfires and the fire came withion 1K of our last place, saved by the rain...

Its a great spot up there for sure, but the wife wanted something a little less close to the action....

I would go with high density fibre-cement sheet. You can paint or tile it, and it won't burn. no good for a roof over a living space, though, the seams can be a problem to keep sealed.

A steel frame and fibre-cement deck sounds good for a fire prone area.
