    Decking materials

HI Guys - I am having a deck built at our place up in the high country that will be exposed to heat, cold and maybe even some snow.

I have heard something about using 'mod wood' type of deck materials vs merbau. I have a merbau deck at home and its a stain job once per year amongst other maintenance.

DOes anyone have any advice on a 'best' option in this case?

Thanks - a land rover will be next to the deck which makes it a related question....

Go the mod wood, made from recycled products initially dearer never touch it.
Now available in 140mm wider boards as well as normal 90mm.

    They have a good website.

Are you subject to bushfires ??

If so make sure you investigate any local fire requirements, and look at the flammability of any substitute decking, decks etc are probably, the single most vulnerable part of any house in a bushfire, and contribute to a significant number of house losses.

My builder has recommended MOD type decks as opposed to wood as the environment will be quite extreme. One of my decks will be tiled, and this one will either be wood or modwood.

Bush fire risk is low, so thats OK but i will check that point [fire resistance] a bit closer.

    Does Mod wood look good?

high country = low fire risk?

    whatcha talkin about willis?

I'd say concrete, tiles, pavers if you must have a deck... but not wood, or worse bits of plastic resembling wood... IMHO, there is nowhere in the high country that is low fire risk... even if it was burnt out last month, it is still high fire risk in another 5 years time when the young regrowth starts to thin out and die off.

Let me re-phrase.....much lower risk than before... I had a place in Sawmill Settlement, sold it last year and now have a place on Alpine Ridge, merrijig where the land is cleared as opposed to deep in the bush surrounded by trees....

Appreciate the comments Arnold - Willis is dead anyway isnt he? or maybe he was in jail, and the hot sister was the one who killed herself...

Anyway, any more ideas on the scenario?

embers and hot ash can travel kilometers in the air during a fire, so I'd still consider it to be pretty high fire risk (despite not being in the trees). a chunk of burning bark or similar landing on your deck is always going to be a risk in an area like that...

    nice spot by the way!!
