i over heated my 3.9 the other day due nto a failing viscus hub and 2 dead thermo fans i replace the hub and thermos and got a couple of quotes to replace the head gaskets just wanting to know what i should pay. quote 1 $2200 quote 2 $1350 both land rover dealers,![]()
Also find out what is included in the quote, does that price include reconditioning the heads/injectors or possible some welding of the heads if required.
I have been through this process late last year, the heads to be reco-ed and the injectors cleaned etc alone was around $900 which didn't include the labour of remove and refit, but then we had to rebuild the complete motor anyway - there is a thread which details the whole process we went through
Just talked to my local pimp ..
if its only 3.9" then they will feel sorry for you, should only cost $20, just ask for sandy ..
I am getting my 4L heads reconditioned. The mechanics sent them off to a head reconditioning mob and they are going to charge me $1200 which probably has a mark up on it. The new heads bolts are extra as are the gaskets. This does not include the labour to pull apart and refit. Hope that helps.
the cheaper quote is from british off road (land rover land) on the sunshine coast and the more expensive at land rover in marochydore.
british off road quote includes labour and all gaskets from exaust flange to tapet covers. if heads are warped $300 a head, for a reco but that is out sorced to another buisness. new heads are $1500 each and a reco 4lt engine is about $4000 installed
The way I read that is if that the British Offroad quote does not include any work to the existing heads, so if any work is needed on the heads this will bring the price up to about $1950 to reco the heads which is similar to the Maroochydore price. I was advised that it would be sensible to replace the rings when the heads were replaced to reduce the possibility of blow by. We also discovered that the liners were moving. My engine had about 230000km but had been cooked to the point that the metal had lost its hardness and required heat treatment to get it back to the correct hardness.
