Defender Spares for Simpson Desert Trip

Going out for a seven week central Oz run mid year which includes the Madigan Line and was wanting to pick the brain of the AULRO clan on what sort of spare parts I should be taking for my 200 tdi.

Apart for the obvious ones such as fan belts, radiator hoses, shock bushes etc, what other "must take" parts do you suggest. I am travelling with a group of Defender owners 200, 300 and td5 and we are trying to work out how many of each part and who gets what to avoid unnecessary duplication and weight.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Chenz

    Hi Chenz,

Before you'll get heaps of proper advices what to take, please let me tell you one thing: drive carefully, trust your Defender and you will be OK. Talk to him time to time, ask him what he thinks about roads, other cars etc., and he will always bring you back to home

In most cases it is a lottery, anything can happen at any time. BUT! When you are expecting something to go wrong, it will happen in 99% time. Once you start thinking, it comes to you. Don't take and don't keep bad things in your mind, simply enjoy your trip. I do it every time, and thanks God all goes well.

I'd do normal service, 1 hour with spanner to check nuts and bolts you can see; pack food, water, soap and go.

    Cheers,
    Ruslan

I wish there was a guy down here in Sydney that would do that. I don't suppose anyone knows of someone?

I'm with Ruslan, don't take too much. If you look after the vehicle its only a few hundred kms across the desert, what are your chances of a failure? Ask around, what have people needed in the past? Spread the "essential" stuff across the vehicles. Only take stuff that will stop you not slow you down. The only problems i've seen in my many years is to components that should have been replaced before the trip. If the component is 50/50 replace it before the trip.
    Just my advice.

The best item to prevent failures is lightness. I have see so many breakdowns due to overloading vehicles.

Within the group I would carry one complete spare front and rear shock absorber.
Make sure you have lots of tubeless tyre repair strings.

Good advice here already I have nothing to add other than, a team of Defenders going camping, there is nothing like it.

I go in a miniature convoy of my Defender Stn Wgn and a mate's trayback and there is nothing like seeing a Defender in your rearview mirror barreling along behind or seeing the back of one further up the road.

And when it comes to camp you sit by the fire with a beer or two prior to pulling the cork on a red and you see two Defenders parked nearby - it does not get any better than that.

Enjoy your trip. Take it slow and don't make it a "mission". That is the hardest thing to do sometimes.
