For starters - some vehicles came standard with big tyres:

    Volvo C303s
    Land Rover: one-ton / 101FC / etc. (9.00x16 is actually 35-36"). The Forest/Roadless rover had up to 52" tyres!!!
And quite a few more. Now these aren't especially common, but how does this blanket ban on tyres over 33" work for these vehicles?

Secondly, many of the (more common) 4x4s that run 35's are doing so ILLEGALLY - so how do we make something that is already illegal illegal? e.g. in QLD, larger tyres CANNOT be approved at all, under any circumstances. The largest you are allowed to go is +25mm on a solid axled 4x4 (so that makes 33"s legal for 110s, but not discos and rangies).

Thirdly, the NCOP, which will hopefully be implemented - is like the QLD system. It will limit tyre diameter increases to 50mm over standard. So 35s would be legal on 110s, but no larger.

As others have said, it isn't tyre size that is the main issue - but how do we stop all the idiots who think it is fun to go out 4x4ing in wet weather and rip up the tracks with lots of right boot (especially when they get stuck), and 50 attempts at each section they can't get up???
    ditto.

    Ben makes sense.

I think we need to be careful not to get into a heated debate over this one. I do think it's always dangerous to think along the lines of "it's okay to ban those tyres (or those whatever) as it doesn;t affect me".

Thisi has been proved with firearms. Not enough firearms owners stood up for the sport in general when they thought the changes didn't directly affect them greatly - and ever since the culture of "banning" has been progressing nicely thank you very much!

It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I bought a vehicle with 35's and will go to 33's once they die but I have to admit I never realised that the bigger the tyre the more it will churn up the earth. On some of the runs I have done in it so far I found other vehicles with smaller tyres did more damage as they were spinning and getting run ups etc

The ones on my vehicle have all the engineering certs etc. so they are legal and i suspect to go down to 33's it may mean more approvals.

It would be illegal too put 33" on my truck - it has 36" as built.

Tyre size has nothing to do with ripping tracks up - more to to with the attitude and skill (or lack of) of the driver.

    35'' tyres

Yep I run 35,s because I can choose to run what I like. If you want to run 33,s go for your life. I think RRC,s are a better vehicle off road than others but I dont want to ban everything else

How about putting your energy into securing more places for 4wders to access.

Down in vic there's no shortage of places for 4x4's to access, just that most of the places close to populations have been torn up by the average yob in his jacked up, 35-running nissota.

Mate a yob will tear up good tracks with scooter tyres. Dont penalise others because they run 35,s.

I didn't say they wouldn't, and I didn't start the thread to have a go at anyone for their choice, just putting ideas out there.

I'm not going to be drawn into a slanging match over it.

I dont see it as it being a hunting party to penalise people who run bigger tyres , it was a poll on what do you think about max tyre size

At which we have all added our own opinions some valid and others off with the fairys

My thoughts are and mainly after seeing the state of the tracks in vic last weekend , is that most of the tracks are beyond 33" tyres a min 35" tyre would and did show me up with 34" swampers on my car

Now where should the blame be for the track conditions the state gov , fed gov , or the state parks or the roads department or people with small tyres or big tyres and heaps of hp

We can all blame someone else or ourselves but it all boils down to being sensible about this and looking to the future or our recreational hobbies will be no more
